off count[edit]

I would say that the off-count is in the lead-in to the chorus, not the verse. But I ain't no bandleader.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.249.207.195 (talk) 13:12, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've listened to this song for 45 years, and I also heard it wrong as the very beginning of the song starting on the downbeat of one, and then the off-count would lead into the chorus. But after I listened to about the first 10 seconds of the live cut from the Savoy album, I suddenly realized that the very beginning of the song really does start on the "and of four", which in this 4/4 time signature is also known as the "upbeat to one". The first two notes on the clavinet are an octave apart going up, and it is actually the second, and higher, note that is on the downbeat of one, not the first note. Although you don't really hear the first note on the live cut, these first two notes on the studio cut clearly establish the verse's syncopated rhythm. If you were counting these first two notes out for someone, you would say "...and one." Further, with this knowledge of the rhythm, Chaka's vocal on the verse is now clearly syncopated until it lands at the bottom of each phrase, instead of putting the accents on the beats as I had previously thought. And then finally, with this syncopated feel to the rhythm, the verse now leads perfectly into the chorus. But now, it's as if I'd never heard the song before, and I have a brand new one to listen to and enjoy now.
