Macero Category?[edit]

I'm thinking of starting a category for albums produced by Macero. Any comments?

Hi it's now 15 years later and there were zero "produced by" credits by Teo Macero. I was stunned to see that because he produced dozens of hugely famous legendary albums. I added a Produced by (Selected Discography) now for the big 3 (in my personal view) Miles, Mingus, Monk.

It's strange that you'd post that you were "thinking" of it and ask "any comments". What comment would you expect? Of course it should be there. You should have just done it. I agree. Should it be specifically "albums produced by" or just other entries associated with Macero? (like the Miles Davis category)

Producer of Kind of Blue[edit]

Teo Macero did not produce "Kind of Blue". That session and release was produced by Irving Townsend. Macero did not become Miles Davis' producer until the sessions that brought us "Sketches of Spain".TalkingWall (talk) 02:45, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is correct. Regarding production on Kind of Blue:

The initial sound heard on the master tape of the first Kind Of Blue session is producer Irving Townsend's Massachusetts twang. Townsend had inherited the role of producer for Miles after the successive departures of George Avakian (to Warner Brothers Records) and Cal Lampley (to RCA Records) the year before. In a few months, he would take over West Coast production duties for Columbia Records, passing the baton to Teo Macero, the newcomer who would remain Davis's primary producer at Columbia for many years.^[1]^: 90

This is regarding the 1987 Kind of Blue CD release:

One other point regarding that edition: the back cover credits Teo Macero as "Producer." As confusing as that may be, the listing is actually half correct -- Macero was indeed producer of that reissue. However, the most recent CD edition of Kind Of Blue is the first to accurately note: "Original Recording Produced by Irving Townsend."^[1]^: 195

And this is regarding Macero's first involvement with Davis:

The recording of Sketches was the extreme opposite of the spontaneous, one-take approach of Kind Of Blue. The lightness of the former session, evident in Miles's studio chatter, disappeared under the perfectionism of the producer (Teo Macero, helming a Davis session for the first time) and the arranger.^[1]^: 166

Album cover removal[edit]

There is a certain irony in Gyrofrog's removal of the Explorations album cover art. That cover art belongs to a Spanish reissue of the album, released there because Spain's copyright laws allow the record to be commercially released without any approval from, or payment to, the original artists, producer, or US record company (including Mr. Macero, the subject of this article). While we Wikipedians are rightfully vigilant about fair use and other copyright violations, it's ironic that in this case we're dealing with something that ethically, if not legally, flies in the face of those very same protections. Rolling Stone List[edit]

I re-added the Rolling Stone 500 Albums rank. I disagree that it's not relevant to this article. It's a very relevant detail since Kind Of Blue is the top-ranked (at #12, no less) jazz album on a list which predominantly profiles pop/rock albums. This exemplifies the work Macero and Davis did to change jazz and bring the music to a new audience. And Macero was instrumental in creating that crossover. "Macero was instrumental" is a lie. Miles had other producers before and after. It would have been the same album.

Producers should be credited but that doesn't mean they're the ones making the art.
