two versions[edit]

The hit single recorded by Mitchum is the best remembered, but the version used in the movie soundtrack itself is a soft ballad style rendition. They are as different as rockabilly and folk ballad. Naaman Brown (talk) 14:04, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone know who sings the song in the movie's introduction? Perhaps Don Raye, who is mentioned in the opening credits, with Mitchum, for "Whippoorwill"? Tim Ross (talk) 22:36, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Found the answer, and added it to the article. Randy Sparks was the singer. Tim Ross (talk) 11:56, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Scandinavian traditional melody[edit]

The major part of the melody, especially in Mitchums version is well known in Sweden and Norway as the Christmas song Mössens julafton (Mice christmas). The lyrics was written by norwegian song writer and author Alf Prøjsen and the melody is a traditional melody, maybe from Sweden or/and Norway. To that melody you also can dance a "schottis" which is a swedish traditional dance but the word schottis means "from Scottland". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.238.143.7 (talk) 14:41, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
