Older than 1985?[edit]

I believe that the history of this establishment goes back way further than 1985. First off, in the 1960s/70s, there was a bar called The George not far away on Lower Stephens St, somewhere near where the Drury Court Hotel now stands. It had a reputation as a discreet meeting place for homosexuals, at a time when such activities were completely illegal of course. I've no idea if there is any connection between that original location and the present one, or if it's just a copy/reuse of the name.

But in any case, the current premises on S Georges St have been a public house with various names for nearly two centuries. We might want to try and reflect that heritage in this article; it shouldn't be too difficult to uncover more info on the topic. jxm (talk) 22:55, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

We'll, I was mistaken about the former bar on Lwr Stephens St. That place was called Bartley Dunnes, not The George. But the need for a longer historical context of the current premises still stands. jxm (talk) 14:19, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hirschfeld Centre[edit]

The article claims in the History section that The George "was the only large gay venue in the city" (I flagged this as {{dubious}}). The Hirschfeld Centre on Fownes Street contained Flikkers disco before The George and the venue continued after The George opened.

The article contains conflicting information about the year the pub opened as a gay venue ("In 1984 the area above the pub was transformed into a gay disco bar" and "Opened in 1985"). These dates are after the Hirschfield Centre opened during the 1970s.

While the mixed gay-straight Sides nightclub on Dame Lane might not have been a designated or dedicated gay club, it was certainly gay-friendly during the 1980s. Spideog (talk) 14:11, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
