I think that the page regarding the name 'thrupp' should be expanded, it has a wonderful history and deserves more recognition on wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.165.122.125 (talkcontribs) 15:14, 24 May 2006

Where exactly was the lawnmower invented?

[edit]

Lawn mower#Reel mowers says: "The first lawn mower was invented by Edwin Budding in 1827 in Stroud, Gloucestershire."

Thrupp and Brimscombe "are two small linked villages situated in the narrow Frome Valley just outside Stroud, Gloucestershire" and Thrupp and Brimscombe#Phoenix iron works says: "This resulted in the world's first lawn mower being invented at Thrupp."

I checked some of the external links, but I was unable to resolve this apparent contradiction between two Wikipedia articles.

Thrupp is two or three miles from Stroud. Such was the poor condition of the highway when Budding made his invention that it could take a waggon and horses up to an hour to travel this short distance, so Thrupp was a small, isolated village. The same journey today takes five minutes, and the official postal address is Thrupp, Stroud.
Notable events are normally attributed to the nearest large connurbation. The Battle of Hastings, for instance, took place six miles away from the actual town of Hastings at a place which is now called Battle, but it's not called 'The battle that took place in a field six miles down the road from Hastings'.
So it's perfectly correct to attribute the invention to Stroud, with Thrupp being a little more specific. ♦ Jongleur100 talk 07:28, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your explanation, in which you mentioned the official postal address, the practice of referring to the nearest large conurbation, and the example of the Battle of Hastings at Battle (Senlac Hill). -- Wavelength (talk) 18:37, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
