Time of Death[edit]

According to Neufeld ("Rockets and the Reich"), the bombing raid that killed Thiel started at 1:10 A.M. August 18 and lasted about 20 minutes. In UTC, I believe that is 0:10 AM, which is still strictly speaking August 18, not August 17. Theil's house was undamaged, but his bomb shelter was hit directly, killing him and his entire family. The RAF Stations from which the aircraft taking part in the raid flew from would have been on Double British Summer Time (+2 hours ahead of GMT) so the British date may vary from the German if the raid was around midnight local time. That's why there are sometimes discrepancy in dates of raids between German and British sources. Also, RAF bombers generally took-off on one date and, as the operation progressed passed midnight, returned home and landed on the next date, e.g., March 24/25. RAF operations (raids) were dated from the day the aircraft took off, rather than the day (or rather, night) that they were present over the target. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.40.254.20 (talk) 21:25, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Early Papers[edit]

Article should provide English translations for titles of Thiel's papers. The exact nature of his university training is not clear. Is it rocketry or what? Article continues as though it is obvious what Thiel had studied. Maybe it is - if you read German. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 156.98.253.233 (talk) 20:08, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
