Works[edit]

The works section is badly in need of a clean-up. It seems to me that it is dump of anything that could be found on the Internet Archive (including multiple editions of the same work) rather than a proper bibliography. -- PBS (talk) 15:14, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The DNB list of William Bates works are

His works issued 'occasionally' were first collected into a folio in 1700; the modern edition is in 4 vols. 8vo. They all treat theology practically. The chief of them are:

  1. 'Harmony of the Divine Attributes' (1697).
  2. 'Considerations on the Existence of God and Immortality of the Soul' (1676).
  3. 'Four Last Things–Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell' (1691).
  4. 'Spiritual Perfection' (1699).
  5. 'Vitæ Selectorum aliquot Virorum' (London, 1681).

As a preacher he was held to be the 'politest' of all the nonconformists. John Howe's funeral sermon to Bates's memory, printed with Bates's works, remains his most durable monument.

The EB1911 list of William Bates works are

Bates published Select Lives of Illustrious and Pious Persons in Latin;

and after his death all his works, except this, were printed in r vol, fol.;
again in 1723;
and in 4 vols.8vo in 1815.

They treat of practical theology and include:

Considerations on the Existence of God and the Immortality of the Soul (1676),
Four Last Things (1691),
Spiritual Perfection (1699) .
