It has a bend sinister on it. It was not a part of William of Nithsdale's armorial and was, I have to suppose, added by someone who thought that it should be added because he was a bastard. Of course, that is erroneous. The bend sinister is merely a bend that goes from the upper right to the lower left of a coat of arms. Using it to represent bastardy was an invention by Sir Walter Scott. I have seen his coat of arms and it did not have a bend sinister.
