About the template[edit]

I've used this template for what I needed it for, substituting it in. It's not transcluded anywhere and AFAIC I'm out of obsolete English letters for users to favorite. But I'm leaving it here as a model for others who might want to add obsolete letters to other userbox template categories.

See the discussion in Template talk:User favorite letter/English alphabet/doc#Adding old letters. I've kept the obsolete letters distinct from the current ones by

  • List structure in the documentation: The obsolete letters are listed after Z, separated by a centered line of text in larger, boldface type saying
Letters below this line are obsolete in modern English.
  • a distinct background color behind the userbox text: #00CC00, a medium deep green
  • two "footnotes" in the userbox text:
    • an asterisk right after the word "English", linked to Category:Palaeographic letter variants, which includes all these letters.
    • a dagger "†", which is used in some dictionaries to mark obsolete words and meanings (a language geek inside joke there) with hover text
This letter is obsolete in modern English.

I have not added all the palaeographic letter variants here, because not all of them are from English.
