The Goonies is a 1986 platform game based on the film of the same name produced by Konami for the Family Computer in Japan. It was later ported to the Disk System in 1988. While the game was never officially sold in North America, an arcade port was released there for the Vs. System (a coin-operated arcade machine which played NES games) titled Vs. The Goonies. A sequel was released titled The Goonies II.
The main theme for most of the game is a chiptune rendition of Cyndi Lauper's "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough".

The player controls Mikey. An army of rats patrol the stages frequently. Jake Fratelli makes an appearance and attempts to attack Mikey by shooting at him. When Mikey kills a mouse, it leaves behind a small blue bomb which, if not collected, will eventually disappear. The defeated enemies will respawn not long after defeating one and collecting the bomb it drops. The bomb is used to blow up skull doors in where the keys and a member of the Goonies are locked in. After collecting all 3 keys, Mikey can advance to the next level. The game does bear similarities to the film as the final stage is a pirate ship. The game also recreates one scene from the film where the Goonies are on a beach watching the ship sail away. All five goonies are required to access the game's final level, otherwise, the game will start from the first level.
[edit] Related releases
- The theme "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" by Cyndi Lauper, featured in the beginning of the Famicom title and its sequel, was remixed by Mr. T for Pop n' Music 10, from Konami's Bemani Series. The theme retains its original 8-bit song from the NES with added drum and bass beats.
- The three hidden items, Konami Man, Vic Viper (from the Gradius series), and TwinBee, would reappear in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, as well as in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. The in-game description for these items is "5,000 points", which is what the player receives if he or she catches it before it disappears.
