Sylvia S. Romo;[1] (born December 27, 1942) is the Tax Assessor-Collector of Bexar County, Texas, the first women to hold that office. She is currently serving her fourth 4-year term. Prior to this, Romo served as a Texas State Representative from 1992 to 1996.[2]

A member of the Democratic Party, Romo has represented Texas's 125th district as a state representative for two two-year terms from 1992 to 1996. This district consists of one-fourth of the city of San Antonio. She served as the Bexar County Democratic Party Chairwomen from 1990 to 1992.

On November 4, 1996, Romo was elected as the Bexar County, Texas Tax Assessor-Collector. She was the first women to hold a Bexar County wide executive elected seat. Romo was relected to that position for three more 4-year terms where she is currently serving her forth term.[3]

Personal[edit]

Romo is Mexican-American and was born Sylvia Sepulveda in San Antonio, Texas, the second of eight children of Josephina Jimenez Sepulveda and Alfred B. Sepulveda.

Romo was the Bexar County, Texas Democratic Party chairwomen in 1992. She graduated from the Thomas Jefferson High School, one of the largest public high schools in San Antonio, and from the University of Texas, San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas, in 1987 with a B.A. in business administration in account. Romo was born and raised in the historic west side district of San Antonio, a key part of the newly formed 35th Congressional District of Texas where she is currently seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. congresswomen. If elected Romo will be the first Latina Texan (Tejana) elected to a federal position.

Texas State Representative[edit]

Elections[edit]

Romo ran to represent the 125th district of Texas in the northwestern quadrant of San Antonio, Texas, as a state representative in 1992. She won the general election with 61.88% of the vote. She was reelected for a second term in 1994, winning the election with 63.82% of the vote.

In the Texas House, she served on the Texas House Finance Committee.

Legislative Work[edit]

Romo authored or was the primary author of 84 Texas House (HR) bills and joint resolutions during her two terms as State Representative of the 125th Texas District. Additionally, Romo coauthored 22 HR bills during those terms. Romo primarily served as an advocate for minority owned small business, victim's rights, and civil rights.
