The New American Painting, traveling exhibition, was a landmark survey of modern American painting which toured eight European countries from 1958-1959. Organized by the International Program at the Museum of Modern Art, it was the first-full scale exhibition prepared for circulation outside of the United States to also be shown at the Museum itself.[1]
Organized by curator Dorothy Canning Miller with the assistance from then museum colleague Frank O’Hara[2], the New American Painting exhibition showcased eighty-one paintings by seventeen artists.[3] Considered as one of Miller’s most influential exhibitions, The New American Painting tour significantly changed European perceptions of American art.[4]
The New American Painting as Shown in Eight European Countries 1958–1959
The New American Painting tour was seen in eight cities in eight countries over the span of one year. For each of the eight locations, the hosting institution produced an exhibition catalog issued in the main language associated with the country.[2][5]
