Senior Lecturer in Online Journalism and Magazines at Birmingham City University (UK), teaching on the Journalism degree and the Masters in Television and Interactive Content, as well as leading the Masters in Online Journalism.

Before becoming a lecturer edited magazines and managed news and magazines websites. Now writes the Online Journalism Blog. In addition to lecturing, writes as a freelance journalist for publications including Press Gazette, and works as a consulant and speaker to media organisations. In January 2007 organised the Citizen Journalism 2007 conference, and has organised the journalism enterprise unconference JEEcamp in 2008 and 2009. Has contributed to a number of books on the internet and is currently working on a book on online journalism.

In 2009 founded the 'open source investigative journalism' platform Help Me Investigate.
