Why Increase the presidents Salary.[edit]

The Namibian president Hifikepunye Pohamba is said to receive a salary increment http://www.namibian.com.na/news/full-story/archive/2012/october/article/president-pohamba-to-get-salary-hike/ but so many have to ask themselves why. The president has no reason to receive more than what he does not use, he does not pay taxes or any other expenses. The president receives $1.68 million and, the Prime Minister Nahas Angula is supporting the idea of it to be increased to $2.1 million. So many are starving, homeless, people are in debt and need basic needs, hospital care and the government is busy working out budgets to increase the presidents salary which is already over a million dollars.

People do not understand why the president and his Ministers have such a privilege not to pay taxes, we all contribute to the economy of this country and although we are thankful for their work, it still does not sound fair and reasonable for the poor to accept such a privilege. Teachers and nurses go on strikes everyday http://www.namibian.com.na/index.php?id=28&tx_ttnews and i believe they are the ones who are teaching and taking care of the future leaders of the country and their salaries are not being increased or given special treatment, they are the ones doing the hard work. The people that are protecting the nation, the police are receiving even lower wages but their salaries are not being increased http://www.namibian.com.na/news-articles/national/full-story/archive/2012/october/article/no-salary-increases-for-police-this-year/. If the president is believed to play the most important function than the teachers, nurses and the police men and woman should be in the same boat. The government sets their taxes so high and they do not know how hard it is to earn so little and have so much be taken. Everything is handed to them on a silver platter, they receive housing allowances and transport, free cars and probably gift vouchers for fuel. Calculating the estimated amount of taxes that could be received from the President and his ministers combined could be able to feed a lot more. There are so many people in Namibia that are starving http://www.namibian.com.na/letters/full-story/archive/2011/september/article/400-000-namibians-on-verge-of-starvation/ and so many schools could be build. Their children are receiving loans and bursaries that are meant for the less privileged students, this prevents the less advantaged from reaching their full potential and that is why talent goes to waste because the chance is given to those who do not deserve it.

In my conclusion i think that the government should concentrate on more important things. There is nothing special about increasing the presidents salary, it will not bring anything good or productive to anyone. They should not discuss this matters behind closed doors, for the nation is the one that is paying for his salary. Many might have questions about where this money will come from. Will the peoples taxes be increased? because when a strike appears there seems to be no money in the government and they say we as a country are the government. If they really care about the nation than they should think of them first and make their lives better than for themselves.
