The Occhialini Medal and Prize was instituted in 2007 by the Italian Physical Society together with the Institute of Physics. to honour the memory of the physicist Giuseppe Occhialini. The award is made alternately by the Councils of one of the two societies to a physicist selected from a list of nominees submitted by the other. The prize consists in a silver medal and a monetary prize (3000 Euros), and is given to the winner physicists for distinguished work carried out in the 10 years leading up to the award.[1]

Year Winner Institution Motivation
2013 Silvia Pascoli Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology, Department of Physics, Durham University For her major contributions to the study of, and leadership in, the field of neutrino phenomenology.
2012 Eugenio Coccia University of Rome Tor Vergata and INFN For his major contribution to the realisation of the first long-term observatories with cryogenic and ultracryogenic detectors of gravitational waves and for his international role in the gravitational-wave community and in the broader community of astroparticle physics.
2011 Gian-Luca Oppo University of Strathclyde For novel insights into spatio-temporal dynamics of lasers, nonlinear and quantum optical systems, achieved through the development and application of powerful techniques for small-scale computing.
2010 Ignazio Ciufolini University of Salento For providing further experimental confirmation of Einstein’s theory of General Relativity through the use of laser-ranged satellites to study and measure frame-dragging.
2009 Gaetana Laricchia University College London For distinguished work on experimental positron physics, in particular for developing and using the world's only positronium beam.
2008 Francesco Vissani Gran Sasso Laboratory of INFN For his distinguished contributions to neutrino physics and, in particular, to the phenomenology and theory of neutrino mass and mixing.
