About halfway through the race, Stewart's car bumped a car driven by 20 year old driver Kevin Ward Jr.. which hit the wall and spun out. A yellow caution flag was displayed. Ward got out of the car and walked onto the track, as Stewart continues around the track. As Stewart approached, Ward was "pointing and gesturing, apparently toward Stewart". One car swerved to avoid Ward, but Stewart's car hit him, causing fatal injuries.[1]

Michael McCann, an expert on sports law, observed that Stewart may face a variety of legal and financial consequences as a result of the incident.[2]
