From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I am a undergrad student at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. I am a Psychology major and I've created this profile for a course that I am enrolled in called Global Youth Studies. The topic that I am interested in focusing on is hip hop culture and education. A few pages that could relate to this topic are Education and Hip hop. There is no wikipedia article that covers the topic of hip hop culture and education, so my plan is to create one. You can read more about my ideas surrounding this topic on my user talk page. Feel free to leave any feedback or possible articles to use as references.

3 paragraph summary of topic[edit]

After browsing around Wikipedia articles and searching for topics to edit I have decided that I am most interested in creating an article that discusses hip-hop culture and education. A few titles that I am considering include: Urban Youth and Hip-Hop Culture, Hip-Hop Culture and Education, or Education of Urban Youth and Hip-Hop Culture. I have not looked into finding a useable image yet but I plan to do so. It seems that having an image on a WP article makes it more appealing to the eye. Going forward I will complete the article wizard on how to create a new article.

I have been sure to search and make sure that there is scholarly research out about the topic. I found myself surprised at the amount of information that is available about hip-hop culture and education. This is something that is being incorporated into curriculum at certain urban-area schools yet still no Wikipedia article exists for it. A few sources that I am considering using include Sampling Memories: Using Hip-Hop Aesthetics To Learn From Urban Schooling Experiences [1], "Hip-Hop Literature: The Politics, Poetics, And Power Of Hip-Hop In The English Classroom" [2], "Fresh Faces, New Places: Moving Beyond Teacher-Researcher Perspectives In Hip-Hop-Based Education Research" [3], which can all be found at ebscohost website [1]. I am continuously searching for more articles to use in the WP. I haven’t yet ran across any but I intend to find specific articles that relate to the positive and negative effects that hip-hop culture has on the education of students (younger and older).

Some sections that I am considering including on the Hip-Hop Culture and Education page are Primary & Secondary schools, Higher Education and Performing Arts schools. I also think it would be a good idea to include sections like Modern Hip-Hop, Effects of Hip-Hop on Education, and Rappers as Role Models. I will also include internal links to the Education WP as well as the Formal education section of this page. I will also include an internal link to the Hip hop WP page. If I can find a specific study that has been done I will include details and results about that also. I think this is a great opportunity to enhance the Wikipedia community with a more diverse array of information. My main goal in creating this article is to inform and educate about a topic that is important but not widely recognized.
