Jim Fox (producer / engineer)

Jim Fox (born 1953, New York) is an American audio engineer and record producer best known for his work with Israel Vibration and the Roots Radics, and more recently, American roots reggae collectives Groundation, Rebelution, and SOJA.

Fox produces, records, mixes, and masters sound and visual media for musicians and related artists across a wide range of genres as a freelancer and at Lion and Fox Recording Studios in Washington DC. His background is in electronics and as a musician. In 1973 Fox began engineering for Hal Lion at Lion Recording Services, a full service industrial recording studio in Washington, D.C. He became chief engineer in charge of production and maintenance. In 1979 Hal Lion and Jim Fox formed Lion and Fox Recording, Inc. Jim Fox is a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Reggae

Though he records artists in a variety of musical genres, including jazz, blues and folk, his recordings in the genre of reggae are significant, and several may even be considered historic. Fox has worked and recorded in Jamaica, he engineered the 1982 Reggae Sunsplash recordings, which was one of the very first recordings of this landmark concert event to be marketed, distributed, and sold in the global market. This worldwide exposure allowed the concert to go from a local music festival to a global touring phenomenon. The recording has been released under several different titles in the years since 1982.

His work in Jamaica gave him credibility among Jamaican artists and record producers alike. Later in1982 he is enlisted by Washington DC-based record producer and owner of RAS Records Dr. Dread to edit, RAS Record’s first production, the master of Peter Broggs’ album ‘Rastafari Livith,’. In 1983 he mixed The Melodians’ ‘Irie Feeling’ album. That same year, he edits the vocals/dub version of Don Carlos’ “Here I Come Again” single, produced by Delroy Wright and released on 7” vinyl by Live and Learn Records. In 1984 he records vocals and mixes Don Carlos’ album on the RAS label ‘Just A Passing Glance.’

In 1986, Fox, along with recording and mixing engineers Arthur Baker (New York) and Steven Stanley (Jamaica) engineered Black Uhuru’s 1987 Grammy-nominated ‘Brutal Dub’ album. In 1993 Fox engineered for Inner Circle's gold and platinum album "Bad Boys". In 1996 he records the entire Marley family for the film Marley Magic live in Central Park, NYC and produces the audio CD. In 1997 "Fox Journeys in Dub" is released, Volume One of the RAS Records series Dub for Daze. In 2003 he produced postproduction Surround Sound mixes for "Reggae On The River 20th Annual" DVD and CD.

The 1980’s though 2006 he recorded and/or engineered albums for RAS Records' artists Freddie McGregor, Eek-A-Mouse, Yellowman, Brigadier Jerry, Dean Fraser and many others (see Discography and Credits).

Israel Vibration and the Roots Radics

Jim Fox was the first recording engineer to record the legendary roots reggae trio Israel Vibration outside of their native Jamaica when he recorded their 1988 reunion album ‘Strength Of My Life.’ He recorded and/or engineered 9 Full length, 4 dub, 2 live, and various compilation Israel Vibration albums (including Power of the Trinity Box Set) between 1988 and 2003.

Of Jim Fox’s place among the great reggae recording engineers, Cecil “Skelly” Spence of Israel Vibration had this to say in an exclusive 2012 interview:

“Israel Vibration work with so many great studio engineers since we start sing. I would place Jim Fox among this group of great studio engineers.”1

Co-founding member of Black Uhuru and living legend of reggae Don Carlos said of Fox in a 2012 interview:

“Yeah, mon Jim Fox one of my favorites, you know? He one of my favorite people me ever work with. Jim Fox is a professional. Him is a good man, you know? Working with Jim was like magic. I wish those days, I mean to get those feeling again. Yeah mon. Jim Fox him the best! Whenever him mix an album that album well mix! It is the best mix you can get!”2

SOJA

SOJA, also known as Soldiers Of Jah Army, is an international band based in the Washington D.C. area. Starting as an active band in 1997, their music is produced under the record label Innerloop. Jim Fox has co-produced, and/or recorded, and engineered every SOJA album at Lion and Fox Studios beginning with their self-titled EP in 2000 through 2013. In addition, Fox co-produced the wildly popular concert DVD Get Wiser Live!, recorded on January 6, 2006 at the historic State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia. The live show consisted of two separate sets, with the opening set being older songs, and the second set being ‘Get Wiser’ in its entirety. The show was recorded and was released as a DVD, known as the Get Wiser Live DVD, on November 21, 2007. In January 2008, SOJA recorded their live performances in Oahu, Maui, and Kailua-Kona. Those performances were released as a DVD, also mixed and mastered Fox, titled ‘SOJA – Live in Hawaii.’ SOJA credits Fox with teaching them how to record a studio album. Jacob Hemphill, lead singer/guitarist for SOJA talked about this in a 2012 interview:

“He has taught us a lot. Where to simplify, where to expand, which songs had the most potential and why. Also, he taught us how to set up to record. We still do it the same way he does, start to finish.”3

Groundation

Groundation is an American roots reggae band with jazz and dub influences, from Sonoma County in Northern California, who have led the recent resurgence of roots reggae music coming from the U.S. Groundation is considered uniquely authentic roots reggae band in the vein of The Abyssinians, The Congos, and The Melodians. They use analog instruments and recording equipment rather than digital, with Professor explaining "No digital, we don't work with synthesizers. Just like in the 1970s. We stick to that format.” Jim Fox has recorded and engineered every Groundation album since 2002’s ‘Hebron Gate’. In addition, he has worked with Harrison Stafford on his solo ‘Professor’ projects. Groundation sought out Jim Fox because they were not satisfied with the sound they were getting. Harrison Stafford explains in a 2012 interview:

“Everything that Doctor Dread put out went through Fox's hands, whether it was recording it, mixing it, mastering it, mixing and mastering it you know. That's pretty much the stuff I heard and listened to growing up. So when I started a band I realized I wasn't getting the sound I wanted. So my goal was to get some money together, find Jim Fox, and fly him out here. I wanted to work with Jim Fox in an all analog space.”4

Rebelution

Rebelution is a reggae roots band from Santa Barbara, California originally formed in 2004 in Isla Vista, a beach-side community in Santa Barbara. Throughout 2004-2005, Rebelution began to build momentum through consistently playing local shows and by independently releasing an EP. In 2007, Jim Fox co-produced, mixed, and mastered their breakthrough debut album ‘Courage To Grow’, which went on to garner mass downloads and radio play on stations such as San Francisco’s Live 105 where their single ‘Safe and Sound’ was played on heavy rotation, with spins on San Diego’s 91X and Los Angeles’s KROQ. The album was selected as iTunes Editor’s Choice for Best Reggae Album of 2007. In addition, ‘Courage to Grow’ peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart.

In 2009, Fox mixed and mastered Rebelution’s second full-length album ‘Bright Side of Life’, which quickly dominated the iTunes charts, solidifying the 1 spot on iTunes in the reggae music genre, and the #3 spot for top albums downloaded in the United States in all genres of music. The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart and #34 on Billboard's top 200. In 2011, Fox mixed five tracks on Rebelution’s third full-length album ‘Peace of Mind.’

Fox traveled to Buenos Airs to mix for Los Cafrés, Portugal to produce Souls Of Fire for EMI. From Chile, Fox mixed the first 3 Gondwana albums. Their 1st one, 'Together,' went gold.

Folk Fox has engineered for and/or produced for several well-known folk musicians including The Kingston Trio, The Chapin Family, Tom Wisner, Dramtreeo, Susan Graham White, Grace Griffith, and The Celtic Folk.

Jazz Fox has recorded, mixed, and mastered records for Larry Willis, Paul Murphy, Hilton Fenton, and Davey Yarborough. In addition, Fox mixed three seasons of Jazz Central for BET on Jazz Cable Network.

Blues Fox has engineered albums for Laughing Man, Bobby Thompson, The Deacons, and Steve Charles Cecil.

Live Fox engineered and mixed the ‘WHICH STAGE’ live shows at the 2003-2009 Bonnaroo Music Festivals.

Fox continues to engineer and produce at Lion and Fox Recording Studios, based in the Washington DC area.
