The EatingWell Media Group, based in Shelburne, Vermont, produces the national, bi-monthly consumer magazine, EatingWell, founded in 1990. EatingWell is part of a women’s lifestyle division of Meredith Corporation. EatingWell has also published a number of food and nutrition based books with W. W. Norton in its Vermont division, The Countryman Press. The current editorial director is Lisa Gosselin.

History[edit]

Originally, Eating Well was a branch of the Canadian magazine, Harrowsmith, created by James Lawrence, which later came to the U.S. as Harrowsmith Country Life. Eating Well published its first issue in the fall of 1990, in partnership with Telemedia Communications (USA) Inc., a division of the Canadian media giant, under the name Eating Well, (two words). After six years with Telemedia, Eating Well began self-publishing under the banner EW Communications L.P. in January of 1996. In 1997, Eating Well was purchased by the New York City publisher Hachette Filipacchi and put under the leadership of Jane Chesnutt, editor-in-chief of Woman’s Day. Eating Well folded after putting out its last issue in March/April of 1999. In 2002, the original owner, James Lawrence, re-started the magazine, with its first issue coming out in the summer of 2002, as EatingWell. During this time the magazine launched quarterly and ran without advertising. The magazine began running ads in the winter of 2004 and began publishing bi-monthly in 2005. In October of 2006, current editorial director Lisa Gosselin succeeded James Lawrence. On July 1st, 2011, EatingWell was acquired by Meredith Corporation, publisher of (among others) Better Homes and Gardens, Everyday with Rachael Ray, Fitness, Ladies’ Home Journal, and More. In the first issue of 2012, EatingWell switched from staple binding to perfect binding and increased sale base to 500,000.

Mission[edit]

“The EatingWell mission is to provide the inspiration and information people need to make healthy eating a way of life. We accomplish this in four ways: We deliver delicious, easy recipes that meet stringent guidelines for taste, nutrition and dependability, recipes easily replicated by home cooks. We report on the latest news on nutrition and health, providing practical, science-based answers consumers are looking for. We examine the connections between food, its origins and its impact on communities. We encourage people to make informed, mindful decisions about what they eat and to celebrate the joys of food.”
