Data[edit]

GTTF+NF=Yamaguchi thought the album was quite pop-sounding, but the album wasn't received as pop, so tried to make their second album Night Fishing more accessable and pop. NF=more impressionist. Still not pop=opinions[1]

Shin Takara Jima[edit]

"Prosperosity/temp-sand"
Song

"Shin Takara Jima" (Japanese: 新宝島, "New Treasure Island") (Japanese pronunciation: [ɕin.takaɺadʑima]) is a song by Japanese band Sakanaction.

Background and development[edit]

[2] -announced July 1 -Oct 3 roadshow. "strong upper tempo rock tune". -first work together as a band after Kusakari's pregnancy. -song was inspired by Bakuman and Shonen Jump's heyday. Theme was "drawing a line" -a musician sympathising with the "pain of making something", just like the characters. -also expressed his desire to find new ground for the band. -same title as Tezuka's 1947 manga. Y had not read much manga before, so researched for the part. Old manga left a strong impression on him. -lyrics took 6 months to write. -Ohne=wanted to create a film where music and film were closely linked in a way not seen before.

[3] -having SKN as the musical artist was the first thing Ohne thought of when the film project was made, before the content or the cast. -first time it had taken him six months to write a song. When he couldn't write the lyrics, Ohne said "自分の線を引けるようになることが漫画家の一人前の証だ" (Being able to change yourself, just as you would draw a line, is the sign of adulthood in a mangaka." This made him wonder if he could link the idea of the "pain of producing" a musician feels with that of a mangaka's.

[4] -SNG August 4. -title was directly inspired by Tezuka.

Writing and inspiration[edit]

[5] SHINTAKA -lyrics took half a year to write. The band's two previous singles had introspective lyrics, and a slow tempo, and the songs were in a minor key. Yamaguchi thought that this style of song would not suit Bakuman, it would be too solemn. -When he was struggling with ideas, he asked Ohne, who gave him the theme of "a shameless graduation song, like its linking to the sequel" 次につながるような、あつかましくない卒業ソング -Yamaguchi didn't simply want a song that matched the film, he wanted a song that would also match SKN's story. Decided the "linking to the next" theme would work with the band's own activities. -Yamaguchi had to ask for an extension to finish writing the song, however Ohne was very happy with the results. He empathized with Yamaguchi, likening it to his own experience as a screenwriter, as he had taken six extra months to write the script of Bakuman.

Natsukashii[edit]

Rival sales tracking agency SoundScan Japan tracked the CD/Blu-ray edition as being more popular than the CD/DVD in the album's first week, with each edition selling 12,000 and 8,000 physical copies respectively. The 2CD edition, however, did not sell enough copies to chart in the top 20 releases for that week.[4]

Yamaguchi feels that coupling tracks express the internal attitudes of musicians more than album tracks or leading songs in singles. For songs that do not suit the needs of commercial promotion like a B-side does, Yamaguchi feels that these types of songs express the artist as they are in that moment.[5]

[6]

Years PV Felt the director made a beautiful PV based on the atmosphere and words of the song.

SM PV feels like Okumura subverted the song in a good way.

A-sides=what the band thinks the audience wants, or what their tie-up clients want. B-sides=personal. Feel SKN's existence. Songs were made to counter the A-side tracks. Remixes=picked musicians Yamaguchi respects. Wants to keep releasing singles, so that people can see both the hyou and ura sides of SKN. Reason why B-sides and remixes on singles. Felt the B-side disc was very dark. Goodbye NWR=asked to think of Japan in 2045 and make the music.

[7] -felt that the band changed after Kurakari joined, suddenly groovier. -Yamaguchi feels influenced by Sleepy.ab, who included ambient aspects in their music.

[8] -SKN rule: if the song can't be played on an acoustic guitar then it doesn't become a sakanaction song.

[9] -during NF era, thought about becoming an instrumental band in the future. -wants to release songs as サカナクション, and instrumental songs overseas as "sakanaction".

[10] -Used to make songs with temporary English lyrics, and afterwards put Japanese lyrics to songs, like "Shiranami Top Water" (誘惑 罠=wack wanna)

[11] -asked Iwadera as he had free time. -Iwadera hated the name Sakanaction, but Yamaguchi wore him down until he eventually accepted. -Considered the name フィルムズ, due to how their early concerts always included a visual aspect, but decided against it because of the 1980s Japanese act featuring Chuji Akagi that already had used that name. -Ejima always used to go to Dutchman concerts.

iTunes Japan Sound of 2009 techno rock technopop new wave house electronic [12]

-band broke up when Yamaguchi wanted to add electronic elements to their music. Wasn't rock. -after performing as a DJ realised he wanted to perform electronic music in the style of rock. -Ejima=previous band's fan. Okazaki=coworker at the reocrd store where he worked. Kusakari=worked as a support bassist for many bands in Sapporo. -everyone became official members for the application process for RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL 2006 in EZO. [13]

-feels like Hatos design team are members[14]

EARLY BAND -Ejima=originally jazz and rock, didn't know club. "allergy" to four on the floor. -Okazaki=hard rock fan who did classical music. [15]

feels like Sakanaction are a band that don't just express themselves artistically in music, but with music videos, live concerts and artworks too.[16]

YAMAGUCHI -usually makes music before lyrics. Feels like his lyrics are haiku: puts word limits on the ideas he wants to express. [17]

Yamaguchi lived in Gifu when he was very small.[18]

- in 2013 expressed his desire to branch out and make a label/music channel/music program, due to his ear condition. Always sees himself as someone who'll make music.[19]

GENERAL -two types of songs on Sakanaction singles: singles that put forward SKN's world views, and those that put forward a new Sakanaction sound. (StR, AA, ID)[20]

1st era SKN=Yamaguchi DJed Iwaderi adlibbed guitar over top. SKN name=ichiro likes fishing, make the word "sakana" cool. majhor debut=not want to be famous, but want to experience the world of major label music in Japan. -Yamaguchi=biggest influence is Japanese literature. Got into music as a way to express the beautiful sentences he came across to a wider group. Feels that he is like a folk musician. -at his dad's cafe came across Kraftwerk YMO Beatles Simon and Garf. [21]

MAGIC TIME (SMAP) -produced at the same time as the Identity single. Because it was such a rare opportunity for the band, Yamaguchi wanted to make something that he could not sing with the band. Wrote a delusional love song.[20]
