User:Risker/VE User Testing

This page represents an experiment in community user testing of the VisualEditor extension. All Wikimedians who are able to activate VisualEditor are invited to participate. The results will be collated for informational and feedback purposes. The tasks selected in the test groups represent most actions that an editor with little experience would be likely to attempt; they are not intended to capture the full complexity of editing Wikipedia.

Process

• Participants complete one or more "test groups" below using the same test page
• During or after each test, the participant reports the results of their test on the designated page, responding to several pre-scripted questions.
• Participants are also invited to leave feedback at the VisualEditor feedback page. They are particularly encouraged to do so if they encounter any unexpected outcome.
• Community participants will collate the responses.

How to participate

• Ensure that you have enabled VisualEditor in your preferences.
  • Note: VisualEditor does not work with any version of Internet Explorer, nor does it work for older versions of Firefox, Safari or ______.
• Copy/paste the test page to a sandbox in your personal userspace.
• Select a test group from the groups below
• Attempt to complete each task in the test group. SAVE the page after each test so that if a problem is identified, it can be isolated from other actions.
• Report your results.
• Repeat for as many tests as you wish to conduct.

Test Group 1 - Basic copy editing

• Remove a word

• Change spelling of a word
• Move a sentence within a section
• Move a sentence to a different section
• Add two sentences of text
• Add a section header
• Italicize a sentence
• Strike-through a word

• Insert a web reference using the "Cite" dropdown
• Insert a book reference using the "Cite" dropdown
  • Click "add more information" and add at least one additional parameter
• Insert a reference using the "Insert" dropdown
• Modify an existing reference
• Re-use an existing reference
• Insert a template
• Remove an existing template

Test group 3 - Images and Lists

• Insert an image
• Add an image description
• Modify an image description
• Remove an image
• Add a bulleted list with 5 entries
• Modify the indentation of 2 entries to the bulleted list

Test group 4 - Infoboxes, Links and Special Characters

• Add/complete a new parameter in the infobox
