Ten Scary Minutes is an online horror movie making contest. The contest is non-commercial and intended for entertainment purposes only.

The contest was started in 2013 by Rick Villanueva with the goal of encouraging people to to use their imagination and the capabilities of smartphones to create video stories. For the contest, he used the genera of horror because it is something that intends to capture your imagination, have you suspend reality and to immerse you into the story as the specific key to it's success.

When the story telling works well, the audience is drawn into the story and, if a strong empathetic bond develops between the audience and the victim, the storyteller can easily build and manipulate the tension. The audience then partakes in the emotional anxieties, the fear and can experience the real visceral rush of the "scare". The thought was, "everybody loves a good rush". There are as many "scary stories" as there are people and, they are as scary as they can relate what it is that is in their imagination to others through the video.

The contest is intended to be a grass roots venture where initially participants where limited to consumer grade equipment. In the second edition, (2014), the rules were changed to specifically limit participants to smartphones and tablets only.

Rick is the the "Ten Scary Minutes" founder and the current Executive Producer. Ten Scary Minutes is currently based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
