Tool ideas, bugs and design errors

Special:Disambiguations[edit]

Disambiguation pages

  • should be retitled to Pages which link to a disambiguation page
  • should filter out links which belong to "For other uses…" etc.
    • might be detected by "_(disambiguation)"

Rollback[edit]

Wikipedia:Rollback feature is dangerous

Inter-wiki-links[edit]

… link always to insecure location (also inter-language). -> make a template to remedy that.

Login[edit]

  • revert+neu: überflüssige Last, verwirrend
  • "was me-edit": nur in Übersicht erkennbar

-> summary box/buttons-area should have prominent warning

Is it possible to work a device which allows reclaiming of an edit in a secure way?

summary[edit]

chapter links[edit]

chapter links should have autonaming. there should be a template for that.

Template:See section is one, but not good.

intra-wiki linking correction bot[edit]

there should be a semi-bot for changing dumb links into fullurl-links. Or a real bot. maybe there is already one of those?

auto-back-to-TOC-link[edit]

There should be an auto-back-to-TOC-link. by template, by css, …
also as template, with a symbol? Or just rendering "TOC")

foldable subchapters in TOC[edit]

per CSS
per template
non-javascript

minor edit[edit]

change "minor edit" to "indisputable"

linking of images[edit]

To make a simple link, a special syntax is necessary:
Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial#Linking_without_displaying
The simple link is misused for a special template action (thereby completely obscuring name, content and usage):
Help:Files#Using files

is bananas: Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial#Linking_without_displaying

template for subpages[edit]

nicht so verschwenderisch, wie {{Special:PrefixIndex/User:Tomdo08}} oder {{List subpages|Tomdo08|User|caption=subpages}}

people using life action templates[edit]

see {{Dn}}-cases (also in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Disambiguation/Fixing_links and its Discussion)

Notes and references[edit]

If using two-step referencing, the references should have an anker, linked to by the notes.

Subst-transclusion pages[edit]

For disambiguation[edit]

While often with multiple interpretations a direct disambiguation page is the appropriate solution, in cases where one meaning dominates a disambiguation on that page is better. Sometimes even a two step disambiguation is better. For further information see Wikipedia:Disambiguation, for help see Wikipedia:Template messages/General#Disambiguation and redirection.

Empty lines glitch[edit]

  • Sometimes empty lines are displayed as such instead of merely seperating paragraphs.
  • Comments and switches (which are invisible) stabilize such empty lines.

BASEPAGENAME[edit]

{{BASEPAGENAME}} is soemthing like {{PARENTPAGENAME}}. A real {{TRUEBASEPAGENAME}} is missing. Or a function for accomplishing that.

page naming[edit]

there are difference in naming rule usage: It seems more scientific pages using more official/definit/precise names.

The current page naming rules are not good. Best way to name pages would be to use the most complete and most official name. Also their should be a special device to show alternative names which where at least at one time most complete and official (if not to much). That would also contain overly important other names which could not be seen in the names already there.

Disaster examples:

  • Augustus resp. Octavius: Who would have known that both are the same, even on their own page?
  • All the different Order of Saint John (including the dot-problem)

REDIRECT is already the perfect solution for finding entries with short and other names.

template messages[edit]

... should be called message templates

... should have "fact distortion", which does not have be POV, but can stem from "was nicht passt, wird passend gemacht"

section linking[edit]

do not link to section titles from outside the page, link to anchors in the titles. maybe do this inside pages, too

Non-free files, DASHBot[edit]

see: User talk:Tomdo08#Non-free files in your user space

Bot:

  • Message text wrong: no addition of a file, but a copy of an article section
  • Message text wrong: no file, but a link to a file
  • Message text wrong: no file deleted, but a link changed
  • Diff-link should be fullurl
  • Relation to future detractive
  • Link in section heading

Concept glitch:

  • About file linking, not about files

Practically:

  • How to work on workcopies of articles (generally)?
  • How is this handled in incubator?

Generally:

  • No relevant difference between an article and a workcopy of an article
  • Example of bad bureaucracy
  • Where does this rule come from?

Target user pages:

  • Are non-free images on user pages the target?
  • Is this problem eminent?
  • Better solution:
    • no linkage in top user page (and in transclusions there)
    • no linkage in linked subpages unless with an "article incubator"-template
    • "article incubator"-template includes a "no-index"-tag

Template:Usertalkbackformat[edit]

User:Tomdo08/workshop/Template:Usertalkbackformat

Category:User talk header templates

reference evaluation[edit]

there should be a "wikipedia:" area where reference checking is organized. that would be patitioned into pages or sections for each reference. there the referencing part of the text would be cited, the reference itself, the checking editor, some evaluation token (vald, wrong, ...) and possibly some remark by the checking editor. goal would be to check if the reference is duely supports the claim respectively the citation is correct.

this might be separated into citation and reference cases. it would be useful to have an automatic summary of evaluation tags (like number of positive/negative checks in current condition (without textchange).

issue: what with change of reference text (not referencing text). how to identify? -> reference ID? (not ID for work which is referenced)

automatic identification of irrelevant changes possible?

special action evaluation[edit]

  • special actions like reverts should be evaluated. this can be done by automatically deriving samples and presenting them on some dedicated page.
  • such a thing would be most useful for checking admins, too

mediators[edit]

are there already any?

constitution, editors right activists[edit]

there should be some editor constitution and editor's right activists. there is a lot of harassing around. obviously there are similarities to real world where can be learned from.

oldid and direction[edit]

beware:

&direction=next&oldid=<id of version n>

is the same as

&oldid=<id of version n+1>

The "direction"-tag is not a direction tag but a clandestine modifier!

specific blocking[edit]

It should be possible to block editors for single articles. While editors may behave destructively for some topic or in some situation, they might be constructive generally.

Template:Incomplete[edit]

Template:Incomplete needs an expansion:

  • link to talk page section
  • date

table captions[edit]

The footnotes of tables are not auto-breaking, at least the one in Jammu and Kashmir#Demographics is not.

Finding section links[edit]

It seems not to be possible to filter what-links-here for sectionlinks.

System administration[edit]

There seems to be no channel for matters of system adminstration, only content, editors and bugs.

Template for partial italic[edit]

Linking something like The Love Machine (film) is a nuisance.

Talk page archives[edit]

From talk page archives the corresponding article is invisible.

Templates with rounding issues[edit]

rounding has to be flexible, best with 3 significant non-zero

Category:Data templates

see List of sovereign states and dependent territories by population density

Canada has now only 1 digit, but one digit after zero is bad for rest of table.

Tlx[edit]

{{tlx}} should provide the possibility of prefixes like subst:

Long comment[edit]

replace {{subst:long comment}} with a proper category-solution
