Grew up engineering (mechanical, electrical, process control) in German speaking environment. Home schooling + public school.
Got into software some 25+ years ago because I recognized the amount of information in biotech was impossible for me (and probably others) to process without augmenting human capacity by machines.
Today I believe we must teach the steps of discovery from stone age to 50 years ago. E.g. from Greek math via Newton to Industrial Revolution. We must NOT get to a point where we could not rebuild after catastrophic failures (solar storm like 1859, asteroid, etc) because we don't know how.
I believe mankind can engineer our way to survive climate change, large impacts, solar radiation, etc. Don't misinterpret that viewpoint: I also believe we should better keep up biological diversity - for its beauty, amazement, also for its utility - which trumps monoculture.
