Old Dominion Brigade[edit]

The Old Dominion Brigade was an Confederate States army infantry brigade during the American Civil War. It was orgainized early in the war from five Virginia regiments and fought in almost every major campaign of the Army of Northern Virginia.

History[edit]

The brigade was orgainized in October 1861 in the Department of Norfolk with the 6th Virginia Infantry, 12th Virginia Infantry, 16th Virginia Infantry, and 41st Virginia Infantry. The brigade's first commander was Colonel William Mahone of the 6th Infantry, who was promoted to brigadier general the following month. After the evacuating of Norfolk in May 1862, the brigade was transferred to the Virginia Peninsula, where it became part of the Army of Northern Virginia. It fought in the Battle of Seven Pines and Seven Days Battles.

Afterwards, the brigade became part of Richard H. Anderson's division of James Longstreet's First Corps

In November 1862, the 61st Virginia Infantry was added to the brigade. The brigade was lightly engaged at the Battle of Fredericksburg. During the July 2nd attacks at the Battle of Gettysburg, the brigade failed to advance with the rest of Anderson's division.
