help[edit]

I want to know how to suggest that an article about two people be split into two separate biographies. The article is about Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 03141119 (talk • contribs) .

Hello, It might be helpful to mark the article with the template {{split}}, then explain the reason for it, on the article's talk page. Let us know if you need help with anything else. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 12:40, Jan. 30, 2006

Cheers! The preceding unsigned comment was added by 03141119 (talk • contribs) .

Help[edit]

First, be sure that it's desirable to split the biography in two. Is there a sufficient amount of information on both people to merit two individual articles? If there is only a very small amount of information on one person (as in this case), it's probably worth leaving it as one article. If you're unsure, place the template {{split}} on the page and explain why you think it should be split on the article's talk page, this will allow other people to voice their opinions.

If you're really sure, then what you need to do is this:

  1. bring up the page you want to split
  2. click the 'edit' button
  3. copy the information pertaining to one person
  4. go to that person's article -- in most cases, as with this one, going to, say, "Gerry Anderson" will redirect you back to the article you're trying to split, so click on the line that says "Redirected from..." under the title and it will take you back to the page
  5. click the 'edit' button
  6. paste the appropriate text into the edit box (deleting the redirect first if necessary)
  7. save the page
  8. repeat steps 1-7 for the second person's information
  9. go back to the original article
  10. click the 'edit' button
  11. delete the information you just copied and add links to the two new articles
  12. write something like 'split article' in the edit summary so people don't think you're vandalising the article
  13. save the page

You should then be more or less done, except you will then need to make some changes to the two new articles if they don't read like separate articles. (In particular, you will probably need to link from one to the other, and back again) -- Gurch 12:49, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
