Tahab Pulwama''<

Village Tahab is among the one of the famous villages of District Pulwama, which falls under Tehsil Pulwama and block Pulwama. It is located in the south-east of pulwama. It is at a distance of 5 km from district pulwama. The total geographical area of the village is 5716 kanal out of which 3532 kanal is under cultivation and 240 kanal is under vegitables(wadi), 110 kanal is under orchids’(Bagi kushik) and 1869 kanal under orchids(Bagi Awal). The village is divided into 10 Mohals viz— Banpora, Ganie Mohalla, Dar Mohalla, Watal Mohalla, Sheikh Mohalla, Deewan Pora, Bungam, Zai pora, Hergam, Balehoom. The village consists of various Krams like—Ganaie, Dar, Bhat, Shah, Rather, Sofi, and some lower casts like Watals, Sheikh, Khar etcetera. The village had remained upto 1990s a living example of hindu –muslim unity, the two communities were sharing each other’s joys and sarrows on every occasion. In past times village tahab was socio-economically very backward and its people were having traditional mind setup, but at present the village is emerging out of its backward character and one can notice changes in the housing pattern, dressing and food habits of the people In past times the infrastructure of the village viz. roads,bridges, schools, medical facilities, electricity were not only meager but were almost absent. At present because of many advancements and developmental programs important changes have taken in all these spheres which have not only connected the village both internally an externally but had also made the life of people very much comfortable. A transition has taken place in economic sphere of the village, as people at present are engaged in advanced forms of trade and commerce in addition to productive agriculture rather than the sole economic contribution of agriculture and menial jobs in the past. Thus the project has endeavored to collect those aspects of village social life of tahab which have remained unnoticed and uninterrupted.

1 Nomenclature of village Tahab There is no written proof why the village is known as Tahab, however there are some legends about it. It is said by some elderly villagers [viz Ab Gani Dar, 70 years old, Gh Mohd Shah,85 years old, Ab Rashid Ganie,Teacher,67 years old and many others] that in past Hindus were living in tahab, they worshipped a spring which was located in between a graveyard and Hindus which was famous by the name of ‘Tap nag’ it was from this spring ‘Tap nag’ the village gets its name “Tahab”

2. Geographical description and location of village Tahab Pulwama is located at 32.88°N 74.92°E. It has an average elevation of 1,630 m (5,350 ft)) The village tahab has an intersession of orchards, cultivable land and human habitation. The climate of the village tahab is pleasant in spring, moderate in summer and cold in winter. Temperature rises to 37 in summer to minimum 5 degrees in winter.

3. Population According to the 2011 census Pulwama district has a population of 570,060. The district has a population density of 598 inhabitants per square kilometer (1,550 /sq mi). Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 29.18%. Pulwama has a sex ratio of 913 females for every 1000 males, lower than the national average of 940, and a literacy rate of 65%., slightly higher than the national average of 64.3%.(pulwama.nic.in) While as Total population of village Tahab is 8000 and total households are 800.

4. Flora and fauna of village Tahab Agriculture constitutes the most important sector of the economy of village tahab the total land of the village is 5716 kanal, out of which 3532 kanal is Awal abi [cultivable land],204 kanal is wadi[vegetables]118 kanal is bagi khushik and 1869 kanal is bagi awal[source from patwari] village tahab abounds rich flora like Rice, Paddy, Wheat, Maize, Vegetables, Fruits, Oil seeds and milk are the main contributors to the grass domestic product. The main livelihood opportunities to a large section of workforce of our village tahab is fruits like Apple, Cherry, Almonds, Walnut and pear are the important one product in our village. Other than fruits and Rice there are other trees include popular and Willow which are planted on the bonds ,boundaries and on the banks of streams, Walnut trees spread thoroughly in the uncultivated land, Chinar trees are found in schools graveyards and in the vicinity of shrines. Fauna of the village tahab includes a wide range of birds like crows[kaw],Wood peckers[kuk-ta-thol], bulbul[bichur], dove[kukil], pigeons[kutr] black kite[gaunt] and sparrow[tzer] and people earn their livelihood on variety of live stock.

So far as family structure of tahab is concerned in past times joint family was most prevalent system. Large families were living jointly in a single house, which includes grandfather, grandmother, elder uncle, elder aunt and cousin brothers. The eldest male member was the head of the family and allother members respect and obey him.All important decisions were taken by him, and were living jointly and worked for rhe common cause. Joint family system was much preferred because in old times agriculture was the main occupation of the people which required a large man power. In past times children and young men possessing moral character obeyed their elders which were also a cause for the successful existence of joint family system. There were the certain causes about which I came to know during my interaction with certain elderly persons of the village. But from past 40-50 years one finds that joint family system in village tahab is at the verge of decline and nuclear family system is fast growing and the causes far the same are as follows: • people nowadays prefer to live in a nuclear family system due to which agricultural land stands distributed, and so much of man power is not required now.Because of the mechanization of agriculture, people also are now much more interested in other sectors like government jobs and other business activities so the people now don’t feel to live in a joint family system • Because of the present modernization and materialism people had lost their moral and ethical values and are caring least about their responsibility towards their elders. People generally think that they cannot increase their individual property in a joint family system. So they prefer to live a separate life. • In old times the authority of mother-in-law was considered absolute and unquestioned, but with the passage of time this has become formal than real. this inevitably leads to tension and ill-will in the family with the result there were no cordial and harmonious relations between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. though a change has occurred by now,because of literacy and awareness, but there are still stray instances of cruelty by the mother-in-law, the daughter-in-law have, on the whole, extricated herself from the authoritarian clutches of the mother-in-law this can be substantiated by this Kashmir proverb, hash ti thazi ti nush ti thazi deg daz ti wali kus.translation;You stout I stout who will carry dirt out. And sometimes mother-in-law used to say a Kashmir proverb against her daughter-in-law before her relatives and neighbors as “par batz gar czav yeklay arr czav” which means that a daughter-in-law is not always a well wisher of a joint family

• When daughter-in-law reaches to the home of their in-laws, they from the very first day try their best to provoke their husband against their family members with this or that reason just to motivate him to live a separate life.
