Disputed fair use rationale for File:WVPD.gif}

Thank you for uploading File:WVPD.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Additionally, if you continue uploading bad images, you may be blocked from uploading. STBotI (talk) 01:05, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Excellent work with all those articles. However, the inclusion of defunct agencies into the "Provincial" group is somewhat misleading. Would you object if I move them to a new group called "Defunct"? Thanks! ninety:one 23:28, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, wasn't trying to suggest that you did that. On another point, that template is getting rather cluttered now. I'm shortly going to be rolling out Template:Law enforcement in the United Kingdom and was wondering whether Canada would befit from a similar one - as manpower and museums shouldn't really be in a template titled "law enforcement agencies". ninety:one 16:43, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Oakbaypolice.gif)

Thanks for uploading File:Oakbaypolice.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:44, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

BC Universities

You raise a good point. However, the establishment of an institution is independent of political legislation. You can have universities and colleges that are not formed from legislation. That is why, yes, Emily Carr is technically the second oldest institution in BC. That's like saying New York City was "formed" when it became a megacity and merged its suburban cities. It is not consistent with proper usage. Keitherson (talk) 06:02, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

On the note of Texas A&M you may also want to look at featured article University of California, Riverside. That date of establishment also begins with the cornerstone of an institution, not its legislation. Governments de jure may "create" legal operating entities, but that is not reflective of the history behind them. Keitherson (talk) 06:19, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Actually you're incorrect. The reason why some universities are created by political legislation is because the title "university" is protected under BC law. Likewise, a university may be located in BC but not have been created by BC law. For example, Queen's University in Vancouver. You are also incorrect about retroactive legislation; degrees from colleges that "changed" into universities are also considered conferred by the new "status". For example, UBC-Okanagan retroactively changed the degree holders of Okanagan University College. All 5 "new" universities also have plans to retroactively change degree holders to the new name.

Wikipedia also does not specifically ask for "what date did this institution become a university", as seen in all the featured articles I have linked you. It is the date of establishment of the institution. And quite frankly, the reason why Canadian university articles do not "match up" to American ones is because none of them are at a standard high enough to be featured on the Wikipedia front page and follow the guidelines. The information is also likely to have been done by few authors - hence why this "mark to avoid confusion" is only on Canadian pages. It is in fact, erroneous. Keitherson (talk) 09:32, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

I think you are simply reading into too much from a single date represented on an infobox to claim that saying "Established 19XX" is somehow claiming "University since 19XX" or "Legislation since 19XX". That date is the establishment of the institution. Businesses and organizations legally change names and rebrand frequently. That does not mean they cease to exist and a new legal entity is created whenever they do so, and it is not misleading when a company says "established since 19XX" when it was run under a different name.

If clarity is your concern, the history of a university or college is usually outlined in the appropriate sections, or given a link, to show the development of the school from small to large, young to old. The infobox, however, is not the appropriate place to bring up concerns about "misleading" people when it is clear that it is not "misleading" unless you are reading beyond the obvious and making implicit assumptions that are not present. Keitherson (talk) 09:41, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Yes, it would be illegal for a holder of a degree who graduated from UCFV to claim that they graduated from UFV. However, their degree is printed with UFV's logo and authorization, and they are considered part of UFV's alumni. It's not as if their school "disappeared" and they are no longer degree-holder or a graduate when UFV changed legal status and/or name. The key here is accurate representation, or rather to prevent misrepresentation.

And yes, all schools in Canada are affiliated with legislation. Even in America, all schools at the minimum require state licensure or face breaking the law. When I said "independent of political legislation" I meant along the lines of public control and funding - schools like Quest University. (I shouldn't have used the word "legislation", sorry)

Why remove all previous names of the school and their previous dates and incarnations from the infobox? It's cluttersome; that information is better suited for the historical section of the article. There is no featured article relating to any university or college that would find such practice acceptable. One does not find featured article candidate Syracuse University putting Genesee College in the infobox. Perhaps you could help by changing all the Canadian university pages to reflect the same. Keitherson (talk) 10:40, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Also, on the note of Canadian universities, you'll see McGill University is written in the same style, and does not list all the dates and information of McGill College. It's one of the only four B-Rated articles on Canadian universities according to WP:WikiProject Education in Canada. Keitherson (talk) 10:49, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. A lot of the university pages need major work. :) Keitherson (talk) 00:02, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Re: Knife legislation

I've just reviewed that tautological statement that was previously along the lines of "Prohibited knifes are illegal unless there is special dispensation". I removed that initially as something so obvious it probably isn't worth saying. Your more recent edit makes clear the difference between acquisition and ownership, so it makes a valid point. It seems similar to the situation here in the UK with flick knives, although no licensing or dispensation is needed over here for those knives. CrispMuncher (talk) 16:36, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for File:EPS patch.gif}

Thank you for uploading File:EPS patch.gif.

Your uploads

Good day. I see that you have uploaded a number of images to Wikipedia. First off, thank you for your contributions. Unfortunately, there are some guidelines that we need to follow with copyrighted images. Specifically, you need to add a source for the image (a link to a website will do), a copyright tag (there are some listed at WP:ICT), and a rationale explaining why we can use a copyrighted image (explained at WP:NFURG). I see that your images fail to include one of these. Please stop uploading images and address the concerns listed above. If you need assistance, you can ask at the help desk. If you do not fix these images, and you continue to make bad uploads, you will be blocked and your images will be deleted. Thanks for your contributions! STBotI (talk) 02:54, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:UWO CoA.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image which is not under a free license or in the public domain and it has not been used in any article for more than seven days.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
