End of pipe[edit]

Hey Econtruthseeker, I'm providing online support for your environmental econ course and I had some thoughts on your draft idea:

First off, this is a good topic choice! Near as I can tell wikipedia doesn't have much coverage on the concept but there are a number of great sources describing it in detail. That's the perfect storm for a good new wikipedia article. There's an article on end of pipe abatement in the german wikipedia (it's pretty short) but this is a good sense of what's here already: it's very focused on the technology and not the larger economic implications of choosing EOP over some other form of abatement.
I've dug up some sources (I like gophering for sources!) on the subject. this is a lifecycle analysis of EOP tech in municipal waste, but it's also a good framework for analysis of the efficiency of these practices in general (though the term "end of pipe" has a somewhat different meaning for municipal waste processing vs. our traditional sense of a firm choosing cleaner products over scrubbers). this is a survey covering choices between EOP and other abatement strategies. This is a bit more bespoke, but it's an economic analysis of EOP choices in US firms (a similar paper covering Sweden).
My suggestions for an article like this:
- A section introducing the basic concept of EOP vs. other forms of abatement.
- A section on the means of EOP abatement (you can look at the articles we have now on scrubbers, etc. for some ideas)
- A section on the prevalence of EOP over or among other forms
- A section on the impacts of EOP abatement (either for firms or for countries)
I don't know if there is sourcing available to make the above work well, but I think that might make for a good skeleton.
