WOVD (World Organisation Volleyball for Disabled) has been founded in 1980 in the Netherlands by the Dutchman Pieter Joon

The WOVD has the mission to encourage the growth and development of Volleyball for Disabled athletes in all nations of the World through an organised program of education, instruction and competition aimed at stimulating the disabled to join the world-wide Volleyball Family. In all its activities the WOVD will endeavour the co-operation with the national Volleyball Federations and national Sports Associations for disabled to provide the maximum opportunities for the disabled athletes. The Organisation is devided into 4 Zones; Europe (ECVD), Afro Arab(AACVD), Asia/Oceanic (AOCVD), Pan American (PACVD). Besides regular coaching- and refereeing clinics, yearly Zonal- or World Championships are organised.

The WOVD has 4 major activities in its program: Youth, Standing Volleyball, Sitting volleyball for men and women. The WOVD has been recognised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) since 1980 and Volleyball is a part of the Paralympic Program.
