[edit] Image license issues

I losslessly compress existing images and re-upload them. I don't change the license, I don't change the source, I don't do anything else other than reduce the bandwidth the image takes, and as such I don't break copyright - it was broken when I got there. Other than recompressed images, I've never actually uploaded another image to Wikipedia (I also think that the image uploading procedure has gotten WAY too complicated and filled with too much legalese and is no longer easily accessible by the average joe).

If you see me with a huge number of "copyright infringements" or "violating image upload policies" or "untagged images" against my name, ignore it. Any bot postings on this talk page having anything to do with incorrect images will be removed. RIUM+ (talk) 00:22, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] That thing you did

Hi there Riumplus. Just saw that you "switched [the barnstar image I uploaded] from truecolor to palette-based encoding to losslessly shrink the file size by 44%." [1] Well, I've no idea what that entailed, but it sure sounds like it was a good thing to do and I'm glad you did it. Thanks!—Encephalon | ζ  12:13:19, 2005-08-26 (UTC)

No problem, they say space on the servers isn't a major consideration but I'm sure losslessly recompressing images won't cause any harm, it'd cut down on some bandwidth and make it load faster for those on dialup :) --RIUM+ 12:23, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
You just did it to one of mine as well - thanks for that! I'll bear in mind to save them that way in future (btw, Australia currently 19 for no loss...) Tonywalton  | Talk 15:29, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
Same here, and kudos. Didn't realize I'd saved the picture of Kuribo's Shoe in 24-bit. Ylem 06:04, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
Yes, thanks for that, 89% is a huge reduction. Could you please tell me how to do that myself? I can't find anything on Fireworks or any other program that will do that. Thanks again. Raven4x4x 11:32, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Coorporoo images

Hi, thanks for noticing my post on someone else's page. The reason why I wanted images was mainly to revive my memories having attended Coorporoo Primary School for two years. I am mostly interested in the lower primary section, or what used to be the Year 1 and 2 area. If you have time, some pictures would be great, but otherwise it's fine :) --Ali K 07:17, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Unfortunately, the "little school" building (grades 1 & 2) was sold a few years ago and became property of the nearby TAFE institute. What's more, a few months ago the primary school building was demolished and is no more. I'll take a walk around the school and grab some snapshots for you when I can, there's been some changes in the past few years - the swimming pool has been moved onto the lower oval, another building has been built in place of the original swimming pool, the tuckshop/canteen has been moved into one of the lunch sheds and a building has been built on the top oval to house the grade 1 and 2 students. You can see a slightly-outdated satellite view on Google Maps, right here. There's no extra building on the upper oval and the old grade 1 & 2 building is still around in that photo, but you can see the moved swimming pool at least. :) --RIUM+ 00:54, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
My memories?! They have changed a lot! Thanks for the Google Maps link, it was great. Oh well.. times change, people and places move on.. *sheds tear* :P Thanks again, --Ali K 07:03, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Could use some help with GIF to PNG conversion

Hi! I notice that you are into compressing images to reduce transfer time. If you have some spare time, could you help me get through Category:Images which should be in PNG format and Category:Images with inappropriate GIF compression? Just about all of these images need to be converted to the PNG format. ---Remember the dot 04:45, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

  • I'm taking a little bit of a break from Wikipedia stuff right now (I've gotten engaged and I have my wedding to plan :) ), but before then I was in the process of completely revamping my whole PNG compression method. I've given up doing things by hand and I'm just writing my own personal GUI frontend to the various programs I use. This will mean it'll take around 30 seconds of human input-time to set up a conversion/compression run and then a few minutes while the computer thinks, but I can queue up a lot of jobs at once. With my old method there was no queuing - I had to physically sit at the computer and wait for things to finish and then start the next step in the same image, one image at a time. This way will mean I can queue up a few hundred images and then just let it go overnight, so I'll be able to do a lot more. Not to mention, I'm making it as multi-threaded as I can so it'll scream on multi-core CPUs. Even better, while I don't plan on setting up a networking protocol to allow communication with other computers so it won't technically be a beowulf program, I'm setting up a basic job system so that you just copy the job files over to another machine on a network, manually execute the program and it'll use that computer's horsepower as well. I can use a whole farm of machines to speed up the computation time, which means more images from Wikipedia can be processed, and I can select a higher compression on those images too. It still needs a lot more work until it's done, however (some of the block sizes could be tweaked and I have to figure out some not-so-brute settings that take a tenth the time but compress 90% as well. If I'm processing a 1600x1200 photo it can sometimes take half a day to process one image, so for the larger images I'd like to just reduce the compression settings and keep most of the shrinkage). Thanks for those two pages though; I didn't know about them. I'll go through them when I start up again!  :) RIUM+ 03:14, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply and congratulations on your wedding! That sounds like an interesting process you have going. Will you be making your personal GUI into a bot as well? —Remember the dot (t) 04:15, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Nope, I don't think I will. I'm making it more generic, so it can be used by anyone who needs to convert/recompress a whole bunch of images to the smallest-sized PNGs they can. Clipart libraries for OpenOffice.org, Firefox skinners, anyone really, rather than limiting it to just Wikipedia. :) RIUM+ 01:36, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
I only ask because I created the PNG crusade bot which could greatly benefit from a better compressor. Right now, it can't compress a lot of images to lower than their original file size. —Remember the dot (t) 05:07, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
Looking through the source code of the bot, it seems that you're just converting the image outright and you're not using any external compression programs. I would have done it slightly differently, but to each their own. Either way, while I don't know what OS you're running the bot on, I recommend after you convert the image but before you do any size checks, you run it through an external compression program. PNGCRUSH is a good starting point, but hardly the best compressor out there for compression ratio/speed. It's sad but a fact of life that 90% of the PNG compression programs, and most importantly all the best ones, run only on Windows so if you're on another OS you can't get the smallest possible PNGs. If you happen to be on Windows, though, and you want my current compression queue, contact me sometime (preferably via email as I rarely get on IM these days) and I'll give you what I can.RIUM+ 05:48, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

I think what might be lacking is a statement that you were the one who took the screenshot and when it was taken. Could you, if you are in fact the uploader of the current version of this image, add that information? --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 14:50, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
I wasn't the original uploader; I only recompressed an image that someone else had previously uploaded. I don't have the time to take screenshots any more and I'm still in the process of reworking my entire recompression chain, so I can't make any more edits for the time being where I'm shrinking image file sizes. You can see how much OrphanBot and others seem to hate me, when I wasn't the original uploader of ANY of the images I've been reported on. :p RIUM+ 07:55, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Modeler83.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Modeler83.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

[edit] Lossless Image Re-compression

I just made a change to the file Rgb-raster-image.png and I noticed a bit back in the history that you had compressed that to save space. The version that I uploaded wasn't very small, and I was hoping to compress it down, but I'm not really a PNG expert, so I was wondering if you could tell me how you did it. I've also done a similar thing with the spanish version of the same picture Rgb-raster-image-es.png. Thanks Teeks99 (talk) 13:59, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi there! Unfortunately I don't have access to the old routines I used to use - they're sitting on an archive hard drive so I can't pull them out for you. But from what I remember, almost all the decent PNG optimisation software is written for Windows. If you're running Windows/able to emulate Windows, then a decent command script to run it through is called "pngslim". Google to find the latest version and then add in the latest applications. It's not as efficient as you can compress images by hand, not multi-threaded, and takes a LONG time to go through all the iterations for larger images but it automates all the work for you into a simple drag-and-drop process. Make sure to use something like TweakPNG to ensure you aren't throwing away important metadata. Things like the creation software or pixel size rarely matter, but a Gamma chunk is important for colour rendering.
Another avenue (though non-lossless) is to shrink the number of colours used in the image. An image like that one doesn't need to use more than 256 and could probably get by on 64. Every byte helps! :)
I don't know what the issues are like with me "modifying" someone else's work, what license it should be uploaded as, plus how I do that with the interface Wikipedia has now compared to what it had back then. If I understood that all then I'd definitely start compressing images again but I can't figure it out and don't want to run the risk of stepping on licensing toes. :( RIUM+ (talk) 13:00, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 21:11, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
