Hi Sdinesh, it's complicated in Australia. The three units used that can define a city are all built from different base statistical units: the GCCSA from SA4s, which are labour market areas, the Significant Urban Areas (SUA) from SA2s which are small units (made up of part of a town or a few urban suburbs) meant to be the main unit of stats output between censuses, and the Urban Centres are built from even smaller units, SA1s, which also come together to make the bigger units > SA2, > SA3 (which don't seem to have any purpose other than making things even more complicated), SA4s. Wikipedia for some reason decided to use GCCSAs as the population figures for the capital cities. I don't really like it, but it's the consensus at the moment. I would much prefer the Urban Centres to be used consistently reporting populations for all major towns and cities, because as you say they are based approximately on the actual built up areas of the cities. ҉ Randwicked ҉ 06:48, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
