This article i felt was important to understanding the issue of not only housing, but also affordability in the Chinatown District in Boston MA. This article talked of how this District was mainly an immigrant area and people have been residing here for 150+ years. This reminded me a lot of the Chicago video on housing as well and what the difficulties are in terms of housing. The fear and issue of affordable housing is a real on in the year 2015. This raises some big questions and issues for the world today. What of these people who live there? Where will they move to or live if they're forced to move out? Also what is being done of this?

Chinatown Outline

Contents

  • 1 Neighborhood and characteristics

(Demographics) [1]

  • 1.1 Location- The location section for this was brief, but there is not much else to say about it. Maybe include more of the aspects of surrounding areas as well to give a more in depth idea. There isn’t really anything on the talk page either for all of Chinatown as well.
  • 2 History
  • 2.1 Early history- This section discusses the early settlers and Anglo-Bostonian and immigrant population to come into this area of Boston. This tells of Jewish, Irish, Italian, Syrian, and Chinese immigrants settling the area. This section also talked of garment manufacturing, but not in much detail. This section needs to be more descriptive and go more in depth on the specific groups that live there and how it came to present day. I will include more in depth details about the immigrants and how they made Chinatown into what it is today.
  • 2.2 Modern day- The modern day section is decent in length and gives in more depth about the city currently. The information does seem a bit unorganized though and parts of it could be put into other areas of the page or even new sections as well. A lot of this information seems to be fitting of a tourist or attractions section. There is little about housing or the physical layout of the City and I plan to add more to that.
  • 3 Transportation- This section is short, but I believe important since it tells of how to get around and how people are able to move. This section is accurate and does not need any changing.
  • 4 Health care- This section is also short, but accurate since it tells of important services that should be included in any district. This is good for tourists and anyone to know.
  • 5 Community organizations- This section is one of the most well written and lengthy sections. This section tells of community organizations and tells of neighborhood centers as well as committees and organizations. I would add to this section on any more programs and possible lead into housing as well. I would look into also more community and outreach programs.

(community resources)

  • 6 Buildings

[2]

  • 6.1 Housing- a small section that I believe needs new and more updated information. It tells of stuff only in 2014, but no history to it or anything else. I will be adding to this section and including different types of housing as well as possible issues of affordable housing.

(Employment) [3]

  • (Inequality/ housing struggles)

(Urban Policies)

  • 6.2 Landmarks- I would look more into this section as well since it’s only a sentence or two and see what else could be added even on the more historical aspect.
  • 7 Chinatown South and North- this section I honestly did not understand and confused me…I had no idea what to put for this section.
  • 8. (Education)
  • 9. (Work/ Business)
  • 10. (Attractions)
  • 11. (Culture/ history)
  • 12 Gallery
  • 13 See also
  • 14 References
  • 15 Further reading
  • 16 External links

I believe a decent amount is missing from my wiki page and a lot can either be added or even new sections entirely as well. Sections I would want to add would be: (Education) (Work/Business) (Under the housing section I’d also have an inequality section)

(Attractions)

(Culture) with subsections including food, clothes, celebrations etc.

I believe adding these would be crucial to understanding the population and the culture of Chinatown. Part of what makes this district special is the diversity and the rich culture there and I feel the wiki page lacks and even almost ignores this aspect entirely. What makes Chinatown unique is the culture as well as the diversity and how it all pieces together and I will include all of this in my new sections.

Sources I will be using to obtain this information will be from the US census as well information from statistical sites. Possible articles under Proquest or any housing/ project development sites as well. The sites we looked over in class will also be sites I use for my research. I will try to use both public and private sources as well for my information and get both professional and just general public statements and research to make sure all groups are covered. In the event I find any article that are political I will try to find the opposing political parties opinion on the topic as well.

Historical source for you at the library[edit]

Hi there,

I know you were interested in improving the history section of your neighborhood page. Books are often the best source of info for history because the format lends itself well to detailing the story of past events/people/places. We have a short book on the history Chinese in Boston (which will include Chinatown) here at SSU Library- click this link and you can text the call number to yourself so you can come in and get the book of the shelf next time you come by or you can place a hold so it is put on hold for you. The history links provided week three in the LibGuide will get you more on history as well.

Final Changes/ Reasoning[edit]

For my City of Chinatown in Boston MA i feel my changes not only fixed some existing issues, but also gave some new insight into some important pieces of its history as well as give a new light to the city. Some of the new sections include: An (updated) history section, with the section of pornography to be taken out or edited, community resources, demographics, urban policies, community events/celebrations, and business/work. i believe all these sections are all important to someone first learning of this town giving them insight to the types of people living there to how they got there to what and how they make a living. For even those familiar with Chinatown some of these sections i was surprised hadn't been added or discussed at all previously, such as the celebrations/events and the work/business.
