Info for week two[edit]

Hi there! First off, thanks for putting up with me in class today! I hope you're as exceited about Wikipedia and its possibilites as I am. Some things for everybody to think about this week:

  • I'll be preparing some fake articles with problems for next week as an exercise that we'll do together at the beginning of class. Afterwards, we'll be working on our articles. Please do some reading from the books you've got checked out about your building and type up some notes on your sandbox (User:Zoekurtz/sandbox). You can start with basic stuff: when it was built, who built it, why it was built, what's housed there, etc. Expansion will be our goal in week three.
  • If you want to get more practice with the Wikipedia interface and editing in general, The Wikipedia Adventure is a goofy, fun tutorial that takes less than an hour to complete. You don't have to do it by any means, but it can give you a broader knowledge of how to edit beyond just italics and bold and links.
  • Consider putting User:Bobamnertiopsis/Wiki101 on your watchlists by clicking the little star on the upper righthand. I'll be adding some other resources you can use on your articles.
  • I talked about reliable sources today. Second-party sources are usually preferred but in totally uncontroversial issues, it's fine to use sources, say, published by Vassar about Vassar buildings. In Cushing House, for example, I used websites from the Office of Residential Life to cite things like Cushing's location in relation to other buildings and the total number of people who can live in the house.
  • New users can't create articles (but you can create sandbox pages and userpages and talkpages) until you've been a registered user for 4 days and made 10 edits. You can see all your edits at Special:Contributions/Zoekurtz or see the total number of edits under Preferences at the top of the page. This won't be a problem for you guys: by the time you're ready to move your article from your sandbox to the articlespace you'll definitely have at least ten edits under your belt.

Specific things for you:

  • Is your article going to be about Walker Fieldhouse only, or Walker and the Athletic and Fitness Center? They're connected, so they're kind of the same building, right? But they were also built seperately, so...what do you think?

Feel free to reply here or on my talkpage; I'll respond on either. Best of luck! See you next week, same place, same time! BobAmnertiopsisChatMe! 01:47, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
