Staff workshops and events[edit]

Objective: Organise and host workshops for Library staff to explain how they can directly contribute their knowledge and expertise to develop Wikipedia articles; deliver 7+ workshops for National Library of Scotland staff and researchers or related institutions

2nd Month Outcomes:
  • Training workshops were held for Digital Access team members as well as curators in the Map Library and the Science Manager.
  • A reunion was held for previously trained members of staff at the NLS and other GLAM organisations in Edinburgh, which focused on identifying obstacles to contribution and possible resolutions.
  • A training event has been organised for 12 September for staff at the Scottish Screen Archive in Glasgow
  • A Forgotten Faces and Empty Places staff edit-a-thon has is being organised for 18 October, with a focus on improving under-developed articles on Scottish content in staff members' areas of expertise and on getting staff input on areas they feel need to be and can be enhanced both short and long term
  • Staff booklet has been completed and an initial run of prints ordered; in addition, a poster advertising Wikimedia training events has been designed and ordered, as have flyers to be distributed at Wikimedian-is-IN sessions

Contributor communities[edit]

Objective: Help establish relationships with the Scottish Wikimedia community, editors and projects

2nd Month Outcomes:
  • The first Wiki&Biccy event has been confirmed for 17 September, welcoming NLS staff as well as local Wikimedians
  • Organisation of an Edinburgh Wikimedia meetup on 27 October under way, to be held at the Malt Shovel Inn in Edinburgh from 13.00 onwards
  • Blog post from WiR was published on the Wikimedia UK blog
  • Ongoing efforts to contact the Scottish Wikimedia community have identified NLS materials which could potentially be released to commons to support specific Wikipedia articles

Material for future digitisation[edit]

Objective: Explore adding digital resources such as digitised books, articles, photographs and posters to Wikimedia Commons; work with staff, including librarians and curators, to identify areas of Wikipedia and sister projects that could be enriched with resources and knowledge from the Library’s collections

2nd Month Outcomes:
  • Online survey has been created for NLS staff to help identify areas of Wikimedia projects which could benefit most from the Library's digital resources and staff expertise
  • Wikimedian-in-Residence project has narrowed its focus into two primary strands to better link events. These strands have been identified as follows:
Scotland in the World
This work will focus on improving Wikipedia's coverage of Scotland's significant contribution to history, science and technology, and culture. NLS staff and members of the public will be invited to participate in a survey to identify gaps in Wikipedia's knowledge about major Scottish figures, movements, or cultural influences which will then inspire future outreach events. Current events planned include an edit-a-thon focusing on the history of early photography in Scotland, in particular on the Edinburgh Calotype Club, as well as a potential backstage pass event to be held in the new year.
The Women who Shaped Scotland
There will also be an emphasis on providing more information about Scottish women who may have been forgotten despite their achievements and impact on the country and the world. This will include providing NLS support to events being hosted by the Glasgow Women's Library and BCS Women, Edinburgh Chapter. The NLS will also host an edit-a-thon or series of edit-a-thons focusing on Women in Science in March 2014, as part of their acknowledgement of Women's History Month, and special attention will be paid to improving articles on Women's Suffrage in Scotland and Scottish Suffragettes such as Ethel Moorhead, Sarah Mair, Mary Reid Macarthur, and Helen Cruickshank using print sources as well as digitised resources in the NLS's digital gallery.
  • Drafting of an official NLS policy regarding the open licensing of digitised materials has continued and is still under consideration; this process is expected to be slow but materials will still be released throughout the residency on a case-by-case basis

Outreach documents[edit]

The following documents were completed during the first two months of the residency with the goal of raising awareness about the WiR programme amongst NLS staff and in Edinburgh more generally, and promoting future training sessions and other events.
