Wikipedia always opens articles in Indonesian[edit]

Has some setting slipped? I can open Wikipedia in English but when I open an article, the URL looks like 'https://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_Estate' and it's in Indonesian, which I don't understand. Hayttom (talk) 12:32, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Like, when you come to WP, you see the English main page but you get the Indonesian articles when you click on links? Sorry, I don't know why that would be, but in order to give other folks a fighting chance to assist, it would help if you specified your setup. Is this on your phone or desktop? What's your browser? Operating system? When did it start? That kind of thing. How did you get to the English reference desk if it always opens to Indonesian? Matt Deres (talk) 13:04, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
[OP:] If I go to "wikipedia.org" I see an English landing page with "Wikipedia - The Free Encyclopedia".
Then if I type "Lewis Hamilton" in the search box it offers me "Lews Hamilton - Pembalap asal Britania Raya" and if I click on that I get to https://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Hamilton. So I think the problem is the search, not the final jump.
This happens on my laptop and not my phone and not on my tablet.
My laptop is running Windows 10 and my browser is Chrome, and that's how I've had it for years. A couple of weeks ago I used a VPN to access a public US Bureau of the Census page that I could not otherwise see from here in Ukraine. Then Wikipedia blocked me from editing for a day or two - then unblocked me before I'd worked out what to do about it. It might have been then that this weird searching started but I can't be sure that the blocking, unblocking, and weird searching happened in that order.
I got to the reference desk via a bookmark.Hayttom (talk) 16:23, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Hayttom: In the search box, at the right side there are two letters denoting language. For me, by default it is en for english, maybe yiu have changed it to id by mistake from drop down list that appears by clicking on it. Also, you can bookmark en.wikipedia.org just like you bookmarked reference desk -- Parnaval (talk) 16:51, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A quick check confirms that changing the language in the www.wikipedia.org search box seems to be preserved across sessions, I assume via cookies. Nil Einne (talk) 12:35, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Can you try going to Wikipedia in private browsing mode? If that fixes it, it's something with your stored cookies for Wikipedia, or your user account. --47.155.96.47 (talk) 02:49, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
