In this screencast, we'll show you how to make a simple screencast using the open source programs CamStudio and Firefox--the latter with the extension FireFogg. ??? Show websites or a wiki page with links to the two websites.
??? Could show how to download if not at the 2-3 minute length.
There are many ways to make a screencast. One way is to write a script in advance, deciding what you want to say and what you want to display. If you're familiar with the material, you may just want to wing it. Show this table, with the say and show columns. Then ???, or just the script.
Before recording your screencast with CamStudio, I recommend changing a few settings. Select Region and choose Full screen. You could select a smaller area, which will reduce the resulting file size. Now, in "option", "keyboard shortcuts", you can see that the shortcut for recording and pausing is F8. This is useful for making a video that doesn't include you clicking record and stop. Show all that
An easy way to make your screencast is to collect your thoughts or read the next item in your script while Camstudio is paused. When you're ready, press F8 to start recording, and when you're done, press F8 again to pause recording. You can see the record and pause buttons being pressed by the program.
Discuss and demonstrate what you want, like I have been doing here, then press stop. Then save it as an avi file in a location of your choice. Do this with camstudio
Now go to FireFogg.org, and click on "make web video" Do just that.
Browse to and select the correct file. Do just that.
There are a variety of settings, but in this case we will use the default settings. Now click on "Encode to file". Save it where you want. Do just that
The video is now ready to be uploaded to WikiCommons. Add the correct information and select the correct licensing such as Creative Commons 3.0 or public domain. Your screencast is now ready to be used by embedding on various web pages--or viewed directly at the Commons website. Do just that. [Maybe show it being embedded?]
Thank you for watching this screencast, and happy editing. Standard closing card.
