[edit] History
Xavier was founded 65 years ago by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with 17 pioneer students. In the 2008–2009 school year, Xavier had over 1,200 (all female) students studying everything from aviation and architecture to chemistry and calculus. Students at Xavier share many liberal arts classes with students from Brophy College Preparatory, the all-male Jesuit high school adjacent to Xavier.
[edit] Curriculum
The curriculum at Xavier is a traditional and rigorous college prep program. Honors classes are available in all areas of study, and AP Classes are also an integral part of the curriculum. All seniors take the AP Literature exam, and 429 students took 849 exams in the spring of 2003. Some students graduate with up to two years of college credit already completed.
Xavier students consistently score in the top percentiles of standardized tests. Over the past 10 years, the school has congratulated 82 National Merit Finalists, 143 Commended Scholars, 36 National Hispanic Scholars, and five National Black American Scholars. Xavier students have been designated Presidential Scholars in 1979, 1986, 1990, 2001, and 2008 [1]; Presidential Scholar Semi-Finalists in 1975 and 1993; and Flinn Scholar in 2004. In 2005, a national Catholic publication named Xavier as among the top five Catholic high schools in the nation. In the 1990-91 and 1994-96 school years, it was honored as a Blue Ribbon school[2].
In addition to a strong academic focus, XCP has an excellent athletic program with numerous state championships to its credit. In addition to its well-known and meritorious golf, tennis, swim, and dive teams, XCP fields championship volleyball, basketball, track, softball, and spiritline (cheer and pom) teams as well as active crew, lacrosse, equestrian, and badminton club sports.
The school operates on a rotating class schedule, which provides for early dismissal on Fridays throughout the school year.
[edit] Uniforms
Young women who attend Xavier College Preparatory wear uniforms. Blue and white polo shirts or oxford shirts are worn with the traditional blue and gold plaid skirt. The young women of XCP express their individuality on campus in their choice of custom designed XCP outerwear (sweatshirts, sweaters, and long sleeved t-shirts). Sought-after designs are frequently available only in the Mother's Guild shop on campus and through the popular annual Christmas Dinner and Auction.
