Ernesto Sánchez-Triana is a researcher and economist specializing in environmental and infrastructure economics, notable for his work with the World Bank. He has made contributions to the fields of environmental management, sustainable development, and infrastructure finance, particularly in Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, in countries such as India, Pakistan[1], Afghanistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, India, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mexico, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Colombia.

Education[edit]

Sánchez-Triana obtained his Bachelor's degree in Engineering from the University of the Andes (University of the Andes (Colombia)).[citation needed] He then pursued an M.S. in Environmental Engineering and Science, an M.S. in Management Science, and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, California. in Environmental Economics from [University Name]. His academic background gave him the foundation in economic theory and environmental policy, which he later applied to his research and professional endeavors.

Sánchez-Triana has 35 years of experience in pollution prevention and reduction, environmental economics, circular economy, and poverty alleviation.

Before joining the World Bank, he served in several roles, including as Professor of the National University of Colombia Professor, Director of Environmental Policy at Colombia's National Planning Department,[9] and President of the Board of Directors of the Cundinamarca Environmental Protection Agency.[4] He also worked for the Inter-American Development Bank.[9]

He has led the preparation of several policy-based programs, investment projects, technical assistance operations, and analytical work[1] in over 44 countries across Eastern Asia and Pacific, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and South Asia.[4][9] He also has led the World Bank Communities of Practice on air quality management, chemicals and waste management, and circular economy,[43][44] which includes 430 specialists.

He has published in peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet Planetary Health, Atmospheric Environment, Climate and Development, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Risk Analysis, and the Journal of Cleaner Production. Sánchez-Triana has authored several publications on air quality management, chemicals management, circular economy, cleaner production, economic valuation of health effects of air pollution, environmental health, environmental policy, sustainable industrial growth, land-based pollution, and water pollution control.[1][9][38]

Sánchez-Triana has been the speaker at several events and conferences, including the CELP Summit (2021)[10] and the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies (2022) at the UN Headquarters Commemoration.[7]

Work at the World Bank[edit]

At the World Bank, Sánchez-Triana has led initiatives to promote sustainable infrastructure development, enhance environmental governance, and foster conservation and resource management partnerships. He has been involved in projects spanning various sectors, including energy, transportation, water resources, and urban development.

Sánchez-Triana's work at the World Bank has focused on providing evidence-based policy recommendations and technical assistance to governments in the Latin America and Caribbean regions, helping them address environmental challenges while promoting inclusive and sustainable growth. His expertise in economic analysis, project management, and stakeholder engagement has been instrumental in advancing the Bank's environmental agenda and supporting its mission to end poverty and promote shared prosperity.
