South Suburban School (Main) was established on 13th February in 1874. It was initially located at Hazra Pukur (now Jatin Das Park) in [[Kolkata]]. At that time it was known as South Suburban School, Kalighat. Pt.Sibnath Sastri was the first head-master of this school. After a few years its name was changed to South Suburban School, Bhowanipur. The school was relocate to Govinda Bose Lane its current location. The Secondary building of the school was built in 1888 by an Italian engineer and its primary building was built in 1908.
Asutosh College was established by this school. This school also has a history of helping other schools , including L.M.S. Institution (now known as S.S.S.(Br)), Sir Ramesh Mitra Balika Vidyalaya and Chakraberia High School.
The alumnus of this school includes Banglar Bagh Asutosh Mukherkjee, Uttam Kumar, Tarun Kumar, Robi Ghosh, Historian Ramesh Chandea Majumdar, Footballer Sukumar Samajpati.
The school has an active NCC curriculum having Army, Air and Naval wings and students of this school also participated in Republic Day March in Delhi.
