Coding help

I need help with my Template:ArchivedArticle. When I put it into my archived article, it looks like this. How can I get it to look right? -- IRP 16:01, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am unwilling to offer coding assistance until the wording of that template can be revised: at the moment, it is rather unfriendly, and seems to attempt to "ban" collaboration on the article. (Compare, Wikipedia:Ownership of articles.) I request that you adjust the tone of that template to be on par with—for example—Template:In use. Templates being used in Wikipedia's article space must, as I'm sure you can understand, be sufficiently warm and friendly.

  • Unless... That template is being used only in your user space? If so, some degree of variation in the required avoidance of going against the spirit of WP:OWN would be permissible. Where precisely do you intend to use that template? Anthøny 16:08, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Better, and is it OK to say archived article rather than user page? I call it an archived article, because it is an article that is supposed to be revised before being placed on the main site. -- IRP 18:03, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "This userspace copy of an article...", then?
The template is identical on both of those pages, insofar as I can see. Perhaps you are wondering why the template documentation (in the green box) at Template:ArchivedArticle is not appearing? If so, that documentation is intended to not appear on other pages, in that it is simply guidance for using the template. Does that clear things up?

  • On the template page: "This archived article is in the middle of an expansion or major revamping.", and on the archived article page, "This user page or section is in the middle of an expansion or major revamping.". -- IRP 23:17, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ah, yes, that is intentional. It is the output from the usage of a ParserFunction, a system a little too complicated to concisely explain. Would you like me to have the template display only "This userspace copy of an article...", on all pages?

RFM medical degree

For the record, this is a reference to Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Medical degree. Anthøny 22:37, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya, I suggested MEDCOM as I am a MEDCAB member (not a disputing party in the dispute but a 3O volunteer) and am not sure it would be that useful. Would you recommend an article RFC instead or would you still recommend they try MEDCAB? Thanks! :-) fr33kman -s- 22:34, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I'll advise them to do that, I will have to leave the case at this point and get another mediator to do it. btw: I've never come across a vandal on a user talk page; it was very weird hitting submit and seeing the page gone: thought I had screwed up :-) fr33kman -s- 22:45, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, do any of the MEDCOM mediators offer mentoring? I really love DR and would love to be a MEDCOM member one day. Thanks! fr33kman -s- 22:45, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, most vandals generally target only the article space. I must have done something that particularly annoyed this editor; that's probably a sign that I'm doing things correct. :-)
I have never known a Committee member to offer an editor tutoring in Mediation matters; I suppose you could select one from Wikipedia:Mediation Committee/Members or Wikipedia:Mediation Committee/Active Mediators and send them a user_talk page message, enquiring whether they are willing to drill you. Your best bet, however, to becoming a successful Mediator, is to get volumes of Mediation Cabal cases under your belt; practice truly does makes perfect. I do suggest that you are a little inexperienced to have a prospect of succeeding in a Committee nomination in the near future, but I certainly see no reason why you couldn't reach the required standards in a year or so, so long as you are still interested. If I can assist you in any Mediation matter whilst you are "training up," for want of a better phrase, then by all means do drop me a line.

Thanks for your advice. Yes, I am far too inexperienced for Wikipedia! (Although I do ADR in real life for a living). I was actually thinking in terms of 12-18 months and not any time soon. :-) Thanks for offering your help in mediation matters, I'm sure I'll be talking to you! (btw: I've got a proposal about mediator school going on 3O and MEDCAB if you'd care to take a look.) Cheers! fr33kman -s- 23:14, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A novel but interesting proposal! Anthøny 23:27, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
