Domestic & General (D&G) is a multinational insurance and appliance care provider,[3] headquartered in Wimbledon, London. It works with appliance manufacturers providing protection and repairs for household appliances.
History
[edit]Domestic & General was founded by S. W. Copley, who was born in Huddersfield, England in 1859.[4] He was involved in property development, cattle-raising and public transport. He was unable to find insurance for his cattle during transit on his return to Great Britain in 1912, so formed the Western Australian Insurance Company (WAICO) in July of that year.[5]
The company originally covered "all classes of risks", particularly fire, accident, livestock and marine insurance.[6]
In November 2007, D&G became privately owned when it was bought by Advent International.[7]
In December 2013, the business was bought by CVC Capital Partners, a private equity and investment advisory firm.[8] Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) invested in the firm in 2019.[9] From July 2016, Ian Mason held the position of CEO. Matthew Crummack joined the business as CEO in October 2021.[10]
Since 2021, Domestic & General has launched in the US acquiring After, Inc[11] and Nana technologies[12] in the process.
Offices and Operations
[edit]D&G works with UK and international brands to provide insurance plans and aftercare for a wide range of household appliances, domestic products and consumer electronics. Brands include John Lewis,[13] EDF[14] and Sky[15].D&G operates across 12 markets and employs almost 3,000 people. It has offices in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US.[16]
Following the COVID-19 Pandemic, D&G moved to a flexible working model.[17]
Domestic & General was the Official Warranty Provider to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.[18]
In 2023, Domestic & General opened a new office in Nottingham bringing £50 million of direct investment into the city.[19] This was followed the next year by a new Brighton office for its 300 employees in the area[20]
For the 2024 Paris Olympics, Domestic & General sponsored Desirèe Henry[21] who won a silver medal in the 4x100 metres relay squad.[22]
