Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia, the external links you added were not relevant to those particular articles and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a collection of links; nor should it be used as a platform for advertising or promotion, and doing so is contrary to the goals of this project. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

Getting started at Wikipedia

[edit]

Wikipedia is an enormous project, and we understand that it takes some time to learn how things are done around here. In fact, few if any of us understand all aspects of the project, but there are some core things everyone needs to know, or at least know how to find:

Also, please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there.  Again, welcome! CWC 13:09, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New articles about file types

[edit]

Hello again. You asked on my talk page about creating new Wikipedia articles about particular file types. Short answer: you're allowed to do that, but the articles will probably get deleted within weeks unless they meet certain criteria. Long answer: articles are supposed to be about 'Notable' topics, as demonstrated by reliable sources writing about those topics. Warning: the word "Notable" has a Wikipedia-specific meaning which is related to but not the same as any of the dictionary definitions of that word. Note those words "supposed to": I'm sure there are articles about file formats which fail the "Notability" test. (OTOH, new articles are in practice more likely to get challenged and deleted than old articles.)

I'm sorry to give you such a messy answer, but this is a messy and non-obvious part of Wikipedia. If you want to know more, start with the Wikipedia:Notability page and follow the interesting links. Then you might want to read or watch some of the discussions about whether to delete particular articles at WP:AFD. Those discussions are sometimes not as pleasant as they could be.

A simpler alternative might be to add info to two existing articles, List of file formats and List of file formats (alphabetical).

Postscript: Having mulled this over for a few days and written all the preceding text, I just now remembered wikia, which turns out to have a wiki devoted to file formats: http://fileformats.wikia.com/wiki/File_Formats_Wiki_Main_Page. I hope this helps. Best wishes, CWC 13:09, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Block and unblock

[edit]

Hello Ace Evanso. You were briefly blocked yesterday, and I have just unblocked you. This was the result of a false positive at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Yaratam. Please accept my apologies. --Elen of the Roads (talk) 01:11, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
