:Button is Kyou's pet baby boar, and is a comic relief character. Button will sometimes go to Kyou's school just to see her. Due to its small size and the fact that it is a baby boar, it is sometimes captured by several characters who talk of eating it. It has the ability to do seven actions that Kyou told him to do. Button hates Ryou because it mistook Ryou for trying to eat it when she took it for a warm bath. In the After Story, Button has become an adult boar, but still acts the same. Button has seven different skills, one of them being able to take the appearance of a stuffed animal by being extremely still. Another skill is called "Rugby Ball" in which Button shrinks his legs until he resembles a ball, allowing Kyou to use him as a projectile. These skills are considered to be animal cruelty by Tomoya. Two other skills are mentioned in the visual novel, but never shown, called "massager" and "pillow". |

Main characters
Tomoya Okazaki
- Tomoya Okazaki (岡崎 朋也, Okazaki Tomoya)
- Voiced by: Kentaro Ito (DVD bundled with PS2 game), Kenji Nojima (drama CD, movie), Yuichi Nakamura (anime)
- Tomoya is the male protagonist of Clannad. Due to his habit of always arriving late to school, skipping classes during the day, and staying out all night, he has been labeled as a delinquent, or a young person who defies authority. Ever since his mother, Atsuko, died in a car accident when he was young, Tomoya has been living with his father, Naoyuki, with whom he argues constantly. Tomoya was injured during a fight with his father three years ago; since then, their relationship has been very distant. While walking to school, Tomoya met Nagisa Furukawa; since then, his life changed. Nagisa describes him as someone who is mean and bad-mouthed, but actually kind-hearted.
- The major story in Clannad is about Tomoya learning about the point of having family and friends. Throughout the game, he interacts with other people and going through with their problems. After solving their problem and making them happy, Tomoya will be granted a light orb, the symbol of happiness of the city. The light orbs that Tomoya collects will appear in the Main Menu of the game.
Nagisa Furukawa
- Nagisa Furukawa (古河 渚, Furukawa Nagisa)
- Voiced by: Mai Nakahara
- Nagisa is the main heroine of Clannad. Although she is in her third year in high school, as is Tomoya, Nagisa is actually one year older since she had to repeat her third year after an illness that lasted nine months. On the first day of school, she meets Tomoya on a long hill path in front of the school. She has a strange habit of muttering the names of food that she plans to eat as a way to motivate herself, such as anpan and also has a liking of a group mascot known as "Dango Daikazoku" (だんご大家族, lit. Great Dango Family). She wants to re-establish the once-disbanded drama club, but does not have much self-confidence so she often needs help in order to motivate herself through the day.
- The major arc of the story revolves around Nagisa. After Tomoya befriends Nagisa, she tells him of her dream of joining the drama club. They soon discover that the club was disbanded. While attempting to recreate the club, Nagisa and Tomoya discover that they cannot advertise for new members, having missed the deadline to do so. In order to create an officially recognized club, they find they need at least three members and a sponsor teacher for the club, and the only one left is Koumura, who asks them to discuss with the chorus club members. After listening to Rie's story, Nagisa gives up reestablishing drama club. Youhei is furious about the story, and decides to have a 3-on-3 basketball match with the basketball team to prove that the chorus club members cannot hide behind their handicap. This happens to be a success, since the chorus club members decide to share Koumura with the drama club.
- After Tomoya had a falling out with his father, Nagisa offers to have Tomoya move into her house until things settle down, to which Tomoya agrees. Curious about Nagisa's play which is the same as the illusionary world he dreamt, Tomoya tries to find about the story, which leads him to learn about the secrets behind Nagisa's sickness. Nagisa accidentally learns of the secret and becomes guilty about forcing her parents to give up their dreams. However, this changes once her parents tell her that since that day, they had changed their dream to hers, and with the help of Tomoya, Nagisa regains the mental strength to act out her drama. Nagisa later succumbs to her sickness again, and is forced to repeat her third year again in After Story.
- After Story is a continuation of Nagisa's story, where Tomoya works as an electrician, and Nagisa starts living together with Tomoya. In this story, Nagisa faces a tragedy and continues to battle with her sickness. She also successfully gives birth to Ushio, the daughter of her and Tomoya, however Nagisa dies shortly afterwards. If Tomoya manages to collect the needed amount of light orbs, a miracle will happen using all the light orbs, and Nagisa safely delivers Ushio without dying, thus ending Tomoya's "journey with the light". Nagisa, Tomoya and Ushio are able to live together as a family without having a doomed fate.
Kyou Fujibayashi
- Kyou Fujibayashi (藤林 杏, Fujibayashi Kyō)
- Voiced by: Ryō Hirohashi
- Kyou is a bad-mouthed and aggressive girl who is also well known as a good cook. She is the older of the Fujibayashi twins. She was in Tomoya's class in their second year, and has maintained a steady friendship with Tomoya even though they are put in different classes on their third year. She is currently the class representative of her class. She has a pet baby boar named Button (ボタン, Botan). She owns a scooter, which is known only to Tomoya and her sister. She throws various types of dictionaries towards anyone she gets furious with, especially Youhei.
- Kyou's story starts when she tries to make Tomoya get intimately close with Ryou. However, when a rumor about Tomoya being two timer with Ryou and Kyou spread around the school, Kyou starts avoiding Tomoya, Ryou becomes more bold. Youhei finds out that Kyou has a crush on Tomoya too, and advises Tomoya to settle things out before more misunderstanding happens. After much conflict of playing boyfriend and girlfriend with Ryou, Tomoya breaks up with Ryou and confesses his love to Kyou, in return confesses her love to him and become a couple.
- Kyou works as a kindergarten teacher in the After Story portion, and coincidentally is also Ushio's teacher. According to Tomoya, her personality is still the same even after reunion, but Ushio says that Kyou is a good teacher.
- In the movie, Kyou does not talk to Tomoya much, but her relationship with Tomoyo is better.
Kotomi Ichinose
- Kotomi Ichinose (一ノ瀬 ことみ, Ichinose Kotomi)
- Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
- Kotomi is another schoolmate of Tomoya's in the same year, but, like Kyou, is in a separate class from Tomoya. She is in the top ten for every subject throughout the whole country in standardized exam results—she always goes to the library to read extra materials, especially books in foreign languages. Kotomi is a very quiet girl and it is quite difficult to communicate with her. In her spare time, she plays the violin, although she is very poor at it to the point of causing pain to those who hear her play as a comedic effect.
- Tomoya meets her for the first time when he enters the library and finds Kotomi sitting on the floor barefoot, reading books with scissors in her hand, and acts oddly with Tomoya. After several meetings with Kotomi, Tomoya starts skipping the fourth period to spend time with Kotomi in the library. Tomoya decides to force Kotomi to join the drama club to make her more sociable.
- Just when Kotomi starts to open up to everyone, a bus accident causes her to breakdown in front of everyone and returns home. Tomoya visits her in her house and learns that he and Kotomi were childhood friends, but lost contact with each other after Kotomi's parents died in a plane crash. Not wanting to feel the pain of losing someone important anymore, she asks Tomoya to leave her alone. Wanting to bring Kotomi away from her past, Tomoya decides to renovate her garden, while the drama club members decide to gift her a violin, but was unfortunately destroyed. After renovating Kotomi's garden, Kotomi appears to Tomoya, and after some poignant conversation, Tomoya brings Kotomi out of her house to see the outside world inside her heart. The next day, her guardian presents Kotomi her parent's briefcase that has traveled all the way to Japan, and inside is a teddy bear and a testimony, asking Kotomi to live the way she wants and grow up to be an adult. Kotomi realizes she is still being loved by her parents even after their death and cries. After this, Kotomi becomes more mature, and the drama club members finally give Kotomi a violin.
- In the anime adaptation Clannad After Story, Kotomi moves to America to further her studies. She, however, occasionally visits Tomoya and the others. Kotomi also appeared in the movie adaptation, only being a background character as she is only seen conducting a song for the members of the Choir Club.
Tomoyo Sakagami
- Tomoyo Sakagami (坂上 智代, Sakagami Tomoyo)
- Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima
- Tomoyo transferred to Tomoya's school as a second year student during spring. Although Tomoya is older than her, Tomoyo does not show him his due respect as a senior student. She has a younger brother named Takafumi (鷹文).
- She is rumored to be violent and to have a misconduct record for fighting. These rumors are later confirmed, when she beats up several delinquents from her previous school at a day during school hours. Youhei challenges Tomoyo, unable to believe what he saw. After several meetings with Tomoyo, Tomoya learns from Tomoyo that she wants to be a student council president, and later, her reason of wanting to be one. Eventually, Tomoya and Tomoyo find interest in each other and become lovers.
- Although reluctantly, Tomoya assists Tomoyo in becoming the student council president. With Tomoyo's relationship with Tomoya spreads fast in school, the school bodies try to separate Tomoyo and Tomoya, in hope Tomoyo will concentrate more in her position. With Tomoya worrying about his delinquent status will hold down Tomoyo, Tomoya reluctantly breaks up with Tomoyo. After several months, Tomoyo meets up with Tomoya, telling him that she successfully saved the cherry blossom trees from being cut down but she lost something in return: her time with Tomoya. She then confesses to Tomoya that she wants only him and will follow him to the odd ends. Tomoya is touched by her words and decides to resume being lovers. After Tomoya graduates in spring, he sees both Takafumi and Tomoyo off to school, with both of them admiring the beauty of the cherry blossom. Tomoyo's story continues at Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life, Key's fifth game, a sequel to Clannad, as the main heroine.
- In the movie, Tomoyo was already a student council president when Tomoya just met Nagisa, and her relationship with Youhei and Kyou is better compared to the game and anime.
Fuko Ibuki
- Fuko Ibuki (伊吹 風子, Ibuki Fūko)
- Voiced by: Ai Nonaka
- Fuko is a first year student at Tomoya's school. She is always alone, making wood carvings of starfish with a small knife to give to others as presents. This hobby completely drains her concentration and awareness of her surroundings. Tomoya meets Fuko in an empty classroom, carving a block of wood with a knife. Tomoya confiscates the knife after noticing she is hurting herself, but eventually returns the knife the next day. Some days later, Tomoya learns from Fuko that she is carving 700 starfish to be distributed to all the students in the school, wanting them to attend her sister Kouko's wedding. The main problem is that no one in the school knows about Kouko, who had retired 3 years ago.
- After learning about Fuko's accident and her unknown existence as an ikiryō, both Nagisa and Tomoya decide to assist Fuko to accomplish her dreams. Just when they thought everything goes well, Fuko starts to disappear from everyone's heart, due to her waning spiritual powers, as the real Fuko had stopped breathing in the hospital. Wanting Kouko's wedding to happen, Tomoya asks Koumura to organize the wedding ceremony at May 18. Through many struggles and hardships, Kouko's wedding turns into a success and everyone that was given a starfish carving came to the wedding. After the wedding, Fuko thanks Tomoya for everything he did, and congratulates her sister before disappearing. After the wedding, Kouko and Yusuke decide to thank Fuko in her hospital room.
- Through a miracle from Tomoya's light orb, Fuko recovers from coma in After Story arc. She is extremely fond of Ushio, intending to take her away from Tomoya. In Clannad's epilogue, she is shown talking to a sleeping girl in the illusionary world, asking her to play with her.
- In the anime, Fuko appears occasionally in various unexpected situations; this is actually a nod to Fuko Ninja event in the game that happens in Tomoyo's path, after completing the whole Clannad game.
Secondary characters
Yukine Miyazawa
- Yukine Miyazawa (宮沢 有紀寧, Miyazawa Yukine)
- Voiced by: Atsuko Enomoto
- Yukine is a second year student who hangs around in the library's reference room during lunchtime. Tomoya first met her in the library's reference room while trying to find a place to sleep. He is immediately greeted by her hospitality, and returns the next day with Youhei due to Youhei's insistent. Ever since, Tomoya and Youhei start to enter the library reference room routinely. She later avails Tomoya and Youhei an instruction book for magical spells for them to try. Most of them are in the favor of Tomoya, involving the girls they met.
- She has friends outside of her school, which turns out to be delinquents from other schools. She made friends with the delinquents through her brother, Kazuto, who is also a delinquent, after his death trying to save a friend from an accident. She sees Tomoya as her older brother, who has a similar personality as her dead brother. Tomoya learns briefly about the light orbs through Yukine, which are called the symbol of happiness. The light orbs are actually the people's feelings inside the city Tomoya is staying.
- According to the script writers, Yukine was originally intended to be one of the heroines of Clannad, but as her story did not reach their expectations, she was made into a secondary character. However, she was still depicted on the regular edition cover of the PC release, and on the PlayStation 2 release which used the same art as the regular PC release.
Ryou Fujibayashi
- Ryou Fujibayashi (藤林 椋, Fujibayashi Ryō)
- Voiced by: Akemi Kanda
- Ryou is Tomoya's classmate and class representative. She is the younger of the Fujibayashi twins. Unlike her older sister, she is timid and doesn’t cook well (but is otherwise good at chores). Ryou is very keen about fortune telling, but her predictions, while incredibly specific, always manage to be either somewhat skewed or extremely wrong. Ryou plays as a major supporting character in both Kyou's path and Kappei's path.
- Ryou has a crush on Tomoya, as shown in Kyou's arc, and needs Kyou's help on pursuing Tomoya. In Kappei's arc, she pursues Kappei instead, which worries Kyou. Ryou has her own optional path, where Tomoya pursues Ryou and become boyfriend and girlfriend, however it is considered as Kyou's bad end.
- Ryou takes nursing course and most likely working as a nurse in After Story portion. - Misae is waiting for her lover to return, which is actually her cat - Shima. When Tomoya tries to pursue Misae, the cat gives Tomoya a dream about Misae's past. When Misae was still in high school, she met a boy named Katsuki Shima who insisted in granting her wish as a payment for encouraging him to recover. Misae's reluctance on having her wish granted and Katsuki's persistency eventually have their feelings for each other develop further, which also made her elected as the student council president due to her rumors with Katsuki. However, Katsuki realizes that his true identity is not Katsuki but his cat, who gave him the duty of granting Misae a wish before dying. Being conflicted with his duty and his love for Misae, he insisted her on having her wish granted. After announcing her wish on having Katsuki forever loving Misae, Katsuki obliged. Katsuki returned to his cat form, and waited for Misae like usual. Noticing the cat's fondness on her, Misae takes the cat as her pet, without knowing the cat's identity as her lover.

Currently she is engaged with Yusuke Yoshino, and is the major reason why Fuko still exists in the school, despite still sleeping in the hospital.

After this incident, he became lazy, becoming the only student with a higher absence rate than Tomoya. He and Tomoya are known as the "Dirty Pair" in school. He has a sister named Mei. Youhei is a comic relief character; as a recurring gag, he often gets punished or beaten up by various characters due to his behaviour, including Tomoya.

Youhei plays the most role in Sunohara siblings' arc, which centers around his relationship with his sister Mei, who tries to bring back her brother's former self. In After Story arc, he attends Nagisa's fake graduating ceremony after being begged by Tomoya, and visits Nagisa when she is sick and pregnant. According to the scriptwriters, he has the most appearance in the School Life arc.
- In the movie, Youhei is depicted less as a comic relief character and is more serious about life, such as when he gets a part-time job due to his family's financial situations. He also gets along with Tomoyo and the two even worked together to ease Tomoya's depression.

Worried about her brother's situation, she calls Youhei, but instead of her brother, Tomoya disguised as Youhei tells her to come.
- Mei's personality is a direct opposite of that of her brother, Youhei. She can be very nosy about things, like trying to further Tomoya's relationship with Nagisa by becoming their cupid angel or learning Youhei's current situation. Although Youhei tries to avoid Mei, he still cares for her, as seen when he stands up for her when she gets bullied by the soccer club in Sunohara sibling's path.

- During School Life arc, Akio reveals that he was an actor in a theatrical company, but has to quit his job due to Nagisa's health. Akio replaces Youhei's role as the comic relief during the After Story arc, however, he can be serious when needed, as he often gives advices to Tomoya on what is like to become a man. - Sanae plays a larger role in After Story, often comes to Tomoya's aid when Nagisa is sick and needs to be accompanied, especially during Nagisa's pregnancy. Before being a baker at the Furukawa Bakery, she was a junior-high teacher, and had to quit her job due to Nagisa's health. Sanae is the mastermind behind Tomoya and Ushio's trip to the flower cape, in hope for them to reconcile. - He plays more prominent roles in After Story, giving Tomoya a job as an assistant electrician in his company, and sometimes give him advices in life. After being rehabilitated, no one wants him anymore, except for Kouko, who supported him to be a rock musician during his high school days. Throwing his past identity, he works as an electrician. Both of them start to become intimate ever since. However, it was revealed that he had osteosarcoma, a cancer which he carried since he was young, causing him to be hospitalized and is also revealed to have once been a prodigious runner for his country.
- Kappei refuses to have his legs amputated even though it would cause him to die because he could not bear not being able to run, but is convinced out of it by (mainly) Ryou and Tomoya, who were encouraged after having received advice from Yusuke. Ryou also informs him that a new technique of treatment using liquid nitrogen would not require an amputation. This encouraged him and he finally decided to take the operation. 5 years later, Tomoya visits the hospital again to visit Kappei and Ryou, working as a nurse in the hospital, guides him to Kappei's room where he greets him with a nostalgic line.
- Kappei is the only character in the visual novel who does not appear in the animated versions of Clannad.
Naoyuki Okazaki
- Naoyuki Okazaki (岡崎 直幸, Okazaki Naoyuki)
- Voiced by: Hiroshi Naka
- Naoyuki is Tomoya's father. Tomoya's mother, Atsuko Okazaki, died when Tomoya was young, thus leaving only himself to raise Tomoya. After the accident, Naoyuki turned to alcohol and smoking, and held frequent fights with his son. One day while arguing with his son on trivial things, he slammed Tomoya against the wall, dislocating Tomoya's right shoulder. Immediately after that, Tomoya refused to come out of his room, and by the time he finally went to the hospital, it was declared to be untreatable. Ever since then, his father has treated Tomoya more kindly, but like a stranger rather than family. This only hurt Tomoya even more, so he becomes a delinquent, as he is unable to participate in basketball activities any longer, and he avoided returning to his home early enough to be confronted with his father. Tomoya has the intention of running away from his home, as revealed from Kotomi's path.
- As revealed from Shino's story about Naoyuki, even though his wife died and he had become depressed, Naoyuki sacrificed everything in his life just for Tomoya's sake, hoping Tomoya to grow up to be a proper man unlike him. After Tomoya comes to terms with his father, Naoyuki decides to return to his hometown to stay with his mother, claiming his role as a father has finally come to an end.
- In the movie, Naoyuki works a graveyard shift instead of staying home and becoming a drunk. He also cares about his relationship with Tomoya and even tries to ease his son's depression in order prevent his son from becoming like him.
Shino Okazaki
- Shino Okazaki (岡崎 史乃, Okazaki Shino)
- Voiced by: Miyoko Asō
- Shino is Tomoya's grandmother on his father's side. She only appears in the After Story portion of the plot. During Ushio's path, when Ushio is finding her toy she lost in the flower field, Tomoya meets Shino at the edge of the cape, who introduces herself to him and their meeting is planned by Sanae.
