Heathcote is an Anglo-Saxon surname that comes from the two old english words heath and cot. A cot is difined as a cottage or small homestead. Somewhere along the process an e was added to the end of the surname.

The name is believe to have come from the areas of Derby and Warwickshire and belongs to a big group of Anglo-Saxon habbitation names.

Some variations of the name are Heathcoat, Heathcoat and Heathcote.

A close study of immigration records shows that some of the earliest North American immigrants had the surname Heathcote in one of its various forms.

John Heathcoate came to Jamaica in 1685
