Fictional character history

Pre-show

The first-born child of Alistair Crane and his wife, Katherine, Julian was raised as the heir apparent to the Crane empire. Unaware of what her husband was doing, Katherine was unable to protect her son from being twisted into his father's image, and Julian grew up to be a spoiled, amoral man, believing himself to be American royalty.

Julian first fell in love in the with a young jazz singer named Eve Johnson. The two began an affair, and he proceeded to get her hooked on drugs and alcohol. Although he loved her, Julian was eventually forced into an engagement to Ivy Winthrop, daughter of former governor Harrison Winthrop as part of a business merger. Eve went on to give birth to a son, who was originally believed to have died shortly after birth, though Alistair claimed that the boy was, indeed, alive, and Julian married Ivy.

Julian and Ivy's marriage was a loveless one, marked by brief bursts of passion that resulted in the birth of four children - Ethan, a daughter Pretty, Fancy, and Nicholas "Fox" Crane. After Fox's birth, Ivy kicked Julian out of her bed, and Julian instead busied himself with other female company.

2001

Julian was incensed to learn at Ethan and Theresa's engagement party that Ivy had lied to him for years - Ethan was not his son, but rather Sam Bennett's son. Julian filed for divorce. Julian then took up with Ivy's friend, Rebecca, and planned to marry her. Together, they helped his father poison his sister Sheridan's wedding ring, an act which Rebecca would later use to blackmail him.

After the failed double wedding of Luis and Sheridan and Ethan and Theresa, Julian flew to Bermuda, where he worked on finalizing his divorce to Ivy. There, he met up with Theresa, who was desperate to have Ethan reinstated as the Crane heir. After too much wine, the two wound up in bed together. The next morning, they were horrified to realize that they had wed each on on August 14, 2001.

The couple annulled their marriage, hoping to keep it a secret, though Ivy later revealed their union. Julian married Rebecca on December 7, 2001, a union which was later proved to be invalid when Ivy revealed that Theresa was carrying Julian's baby at the Crane's New Year's Eve party, invalidating their annulment.

That night, many of Harmony's citizens set out to murder Julian. Liz Sanbourne beat them all to the punch, however, shooting Julian at the cannery (she could not find his father, who had raped her, and settled for his son instead); Julian fell into a vat of boiling tuna, and was presumably killed.

2002

Tabitha's doll-turned-real-boy, Timmy, was shocked to find Julian alive and in disguise as a short-order cook named Peggy, hiding from his would-be-murderer. Julian agreed to help Timmy find the Demon's Horn, which would save his beloved Charity, who was frozen in a block of ice. The two went on a magical journey through the land of Oz, eventually returning to Harmony the night after Theresa was executed for Julian's "murder". Theresa's family was furious that Julian had never been murdered, but their anger faded when Theresa was revealed to have been alive all along.

After learning of Timmy's tragic death, Julian went to pay his condolences to Tabitha, whom he believed to be Timmy's great-aunt. After sharing a batch of Timmy's Martimmy's, the two engaged in much drunken sex.

2003

Julian was thrilled to discover that his marriage to Theresa had been a practical joke by his friends and kicked the young woman out of his home. Julian sought custody of the couple's baby son, Ethan, whom Theresa had denied him access to during their marriage. Though he did win custody of the boy, Julian allowed him to remain with his mother at Sheridan's cottage.

Julian was also shocked to learn that his night of passion with Tabitha Lenox had resulted in a pregnancy. When he and Rebecca went to visit her, she went into labor, transporting them to hell, where she gave birth to a daughter on July 28, 2003. Right before Julian and Rebecca were to be killed, they returned to Tabitha's home, where she showed them her daughter, Endora Lenox. Tabitha refused to allow Julian any custody whatsoever of their daughter, and Julian agreed to keep their affair a secret.

2004

Julian found himself growing closer and closer to first love Eve, with whom he was searching for their son, even after he married Rebecca on January 2, 2004. When Rebecca threatened to out their affair from decades earlier, Julian agreed to sue for custody of Little Ethan, and then allowed Ethan and his wife, Gwen, to adopt the boy following the stillbirth of their own daughter, Sarah.

When Liz brought Eve's aunt, Irma, to Harmony, Irma told TC all about his wife's sordid past with Julian. TC was furious, but was ready to forgive Eve until Irma revealed that Julian and Eve had had a son. TC filed for divorce, and Julian and Eve grew closer.

Julian went to his father and demanded that he release the identity of his son with Eve, and was shocked when Alistair announced that it was none other than Chad Harris. Chad had been dating Eve's oldest daughter, Whitney, and the two were ripped apart by the news. Whitney began dating Julian's other son, Fox, causing a great amount of animosity between the half-brothers. Julian often favored Chad, regretting the time that he'd missed out on with his son, and made Chad his heir.

2005

Julian continued to stand by Eve's side even after she was charged with the attempted murders of himself (from 2001), Alistair, and Liz. When it appeared that Eve would lose, Julian struck up a deal with Rebecca, and she admitted on the stand that Liz had poisoned herself (Rebecca, in actuality, had poisoned Liz while attempting to poison Eve). Julian was thrilled to have Eve off, but was horrified to learn that the agreement he had signed with Rebecca prevented him from ever divorcing her.

2006

After much begging and pleading with Rebecca, Julian finally convinced her to grant him a divorce so that he could marry Eve. Things were finally looking up until Eve's ex-husband, TC, was involved in a drunk driving accident, and suffered a stroke. Julian soon became worried about all of the attention that Eve was paying to her ex, and things became even more strained when it was revealed that Chad was the biological son of Julian's father, Alistair, and Eve's adoptive half-sister, Liz, and not Julian and Eve themselves. Despite their newfound freedom, Julian feared that he would lose Eve to TC forever.

Julian and Eve grew further apart, as Eve cared more and more for the sickly TC. The two called it quits, and Julian slowly began to show his dark side once again. He threatened both Tabitha and Theresa for custody of his children. He also began to heavily drink again. On several occasions he made vulgar and rude comments to the former love of his life, Eve, but one day he took things even further, as Eve found him having sex with Valerie Davis on his desk. Julian watched almost with pleasure as Eve saw what a monster he was becoming. Julian also influenced his son Fox to go as far as killing Miguel if it meant winning Kay. Eve and Julian tried to patch up their relationship but as of now it appears that they aren't heading back to happiness.

Since Julian and Eve's break up, Julian has become much darker, and reverted to his old "habits". Aside from having sex with Valerie on his desk, he also slept with Eve, minutes after he slept with Valerie. He also began to casually sleep with Rebecca again.

Julian and Eve's many arguments culminated in Julian getting physically rough with Eve. One day while arguing with his ex-wife, Ivy, the two were called by Eve and informed that their daughter Fancy was in the hospital. It was recently revealed that Julian and Fox hired Spike Lester to run Fox over, and help him keep Kay. Fox wanted it to be real, and Julian threatened Spike that he would have him killed if Fox died.

Julian was utterly devastated to learn that Fancy had been raped, and began to drink heavily. He ended up having a drunken one-night stand with Ivy, following their daughter's traumatic experience.

Julian is one of the people that J.T. Cornell was blackmailing and he may be the one who murdered him.

2007

Julian learn that Little Ethan is not his child. Also Julian had a few Rendezvous with ex-wife Ivy! Julian has also recently discovered that Tabitha and Endora are witches.

Retconning

Julian's history has been retconned on more than one occasion. When the show began, Julian and Ivy wed right out of high-school, when his sister Sheridan was just an infant, and his mother, Katherine, was still alive and well. When Katherine and Martin appeared on the scene in 2004, it was stated that Julian had been fourteen and Sheridan six when their mother disappeared (as opposed to the original tellings of the tale, which had Sheridan at twelve and Julian at twenty-nine), and that she had been gone for a little over twenty years.
