Jerzy Onuch

Jerzy Onuch(also Yuri Onuch)is a successful contemporary artist and curator. He holds the diplomatic post of Director of the Polish Institute in Kyiv Ukraine.

Jerzy has recently, in 2005, completed his tenure at the Center for Contemporary Arts(CCA) in Kyiv Ukraine (formally the George Soros Centre for Contemporary Arts). His tenure was one of the longest and most successful in the history of the center. Under his leadership, the CCA promoted education and exposure of contemporary art (both Ukrainian and International). But more importantly Jerzy promoted young Ukrainian artists and student involvement in the CCA. Durring the 'Orange Revolution' the CCA became a political epicentre for young artists-activists (now called REP) who used the centre's premises for the creation of 'revolutionary art'. During this tenure at the CCA Jerzy was also a public and at times a political force, often treated by both friends, colleagues and competitors as a morally authority on the development and the state of arts and culture in post-communist Ukraine.

Career The Early Years

Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Jerzy Onuch received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1979, specializing in painting, graphics and art education. As an artist, he matured in Poland in the early 1980’s, a period of artistic freedom, vitality and opportunity unique in postwar Eastern Europe.

Mr Onuch began to take part in solo and group shows in 1976 and, in 1980, he became director and curator of a gallery affiliated with the Academy (Pracownia Dziekanka w Warszawie) and devoted to innovative and experimental programmes. As a curator, he organized, in the period 1980 to 1986, over 70 art exhibits and art events.

While heading the experimental gallery, Mr Onuch also worked as an artist creating installations and staging performances . As a recognized artist in Poland, in 1981-1983 was invited to an International Art Workshop in Germany and, in 1986, to Vancouver where he represented the East European art scene at the “Strategies for Survival” art conference.

Career North America

In 1987, after spending one year in the United States, Mr Onuch settled in Toronto, Canada. He continued to work in performance and installation art, curating and teaching. He was invited to stage performances at such places as the Wexner Center for Visual Arts in Columbus, Ohio (1990), the Interzone Festival in Quebec City (1992) Center For Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw (1993 and 1995), Center For Contemporary Art “Brama” Kyiv (1994) and at the New Music and Art Festival, Bowling Green State University in Ohio (1996).

Mr Onuch has been invited back to Poland to stage performances and to lecture (1991, 1992 , 1993, 1995, 2002, 2003). Since 1991, when he was asked to be a juror at the first post Soviet contemporary art exhibit held in Lviv, Ukraine, he has sought out significant Ukrainian artists. In 1993 he organized and curated one of the first large exhibit of contemporary Ukrainian art in the West - the “Steppes of Europe,” which was held at the Centre for Contemporary Art “Ujazdowski Castle” in Warsaw. The exhibit was extensively covered in the Polish media. The critics noted that the exhibit presented a vision of Ukrainian art that defied all stereotypes.

Jerzy Onuch’s multi-faceted career in the arts has been written about in many reviews and articles and his achievements acknowledged by various award-granting bodies such as T. Shevchenko Foundation, The Canada Council, the Polish Ministry of Culture, the International Renaissance Foundation, Kyiv, U.S. Department of State, Pro Helvetia , Zurich, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, Saskatoon , Canada.

In July 1997 (until 2005) Mr Onuch has been appointed as a director of the Center for Contemporary Art at the National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” in Kyiv, Ukraine (since 1999 the International Foundation Center for Contemporary Art). During his tenure the Center presented many Ukrainian and International artists including: Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Naum June Paik, Illia Kabakov, Joseph Kosuth, Tony Ousler, Leon Tarasewicz, Arsen Savadov, Taras Polataiko, Boris Mikhailov, Serhiy Bratkov, Ilia Chichkan, Andrij Sahaidakovskyi, Olexandr Roidburd, Masoch Fund, Oleg Kulik and others.

The most recently Mr Jerzy Onuch curated Polish artist Miroslaw Maszlanko in Kyiv, Taras Polataiko, Ukrainian Presentation at XXV Sao Paulo Bienal, Brazil, and the famous Masoch Fund at The Lux Gallery in London, U.K.

In February, 2003 the “Korrespondent” magazine (Ukrainian variation of Newsweek or Time magazine,) named Mr Onuch as one of the 10 most influential foreign citizens working in Ukraine. In 2005 Mr Onuch joined Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and recently serves as a Counsellor to the Embassyof the Republic of Poland in Ukraine in Kyiv and Director of the Polish Institute.

Закінчив Академію Мистецтв у Варшаві, Польща, отримавши ступінь Магістра Образотворчого Мистецтва в 1979р. Спеціалізувався в живописі, графіці, а також, в мистецькій освіті. Як художник формувався в Польщі початку 1980рр. – у часи художньої свободи, життєвої енергії та унікальних можливостей у Східній Європі. З 1976 р. Є. Онух почав брати участь в самостійних та групових виставках, а в 1980р. – став директором і куратором новаторської експерементальної галереї при варшавській Академії Мистецтв. Як куратор протягом 1980 – 1986 рр. організував більше, ніж 70 художніх виставок та мистецьких подій. Співпрацюючи з експерементальною галереєю Є. Онух робив і власні мистецькі роботи, зокрема, інсталяції та перформанси. В 1981-1983рр. його як відомого польського художника, було запрошено на Міжнародний Художній Воркшоп до Німеччини, а в 1986р. – до Ванкувера, де він представляв східно-європейську художню сцену на мистецькій конференції “Стратегії виживання”. Ця виставка широко висвітлювалася у польських ЗМІ. Критики зауважували, що виставка презентувала бачення українського мистецтва, що ігнорує усілякі стереотипи. Багатогранна кар’єра Єжи Онуха описувалася в багатьох нарисах та статтях, він отримав гранти та нагороди таких організацій, як Фонд Т. Шевченка, Канадська Рада та Польське Міністерство Культури. Останнім часом цікавиться електронними медіа, комп’ютерним дизайном та застосуванням інтерактивних мультимедіа в мистецтві. Вивчав цю галузь в Центрі Технологій Дизайну, Університет Торонто. В липні 1997 Є. Онуха призначили на посаду директора Центру Сучасного Мистецтва Сороса, Київ, Україна. З початку 1999р., зі зміною статусу ЦСМС, Є. Онух працює на посаді директора Центру Сучасного Мистецтва, Київ. За цей час в ЦСМ було здійснено цілий ряд великомасштабних виставок (серед яких “Коридор двох банальностей” Джозефа Кошута/Іллі Кабакова, “Художник-Суперзірка” Енді Ворхола, ретроспективна виставка Йозефа Бойса тощо), освітніх проектів (лекції, воркшопи, конференція) та інших мистецьких подій за участі найцікавіших українських та міжнародних художників. Працюючи в Україні Є. Онух здійснив такі кураторські проекти як “ВІН” (Т. Полатайко), “Явна таємниця” (А. Сагайдаковський), “ID” (А. Сагайдаковський, О. Голосій – в межах Днів української культури у Франції), “Малярство” (Л. Тарасевіч, Т. Сільваші). Будучи директором Центру Сучасного Мистецтва в Києві Є. Онух був членом Експертної Ради напрямку “Культура” Міжнародного Фонду “Відродження”, з 1999р. і дотепер є скарбником Правління асоціації ICAN - Міжнародної Мережі Сучасного Мистецтва (Амстердам), а з травня 2000р. і досьогодні – членом Правління асоціації Art Centers of Europe – Мистецькі Центри Європи (Альткірк, Франція). У вересні 2000р. Є. Онуха було призначено куратором української національної презентації на 49 Бієннале у Венеції У 2001,2003 рр.Є.Онух був куратором української презентації на 25 і 26 Біеннале у Сан-Паоло (Бразилія).У 200З р. за рейтингом журналу "Кореспондент" він був визнаний одним з найвпливовіших іноземців, які мешкають в Україні. З листопада 2005 р. призначений Директором Польського Інституту у Києві і Радником Посольства Республіки Польща в Україні.
