Powelliphanta gilliesi brunnea, known as one of the amber snails, is a subspecies of large, carnivorous land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Rhytididae.

Distribution

This species is endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. It is found only just north of the Paturau River, West Nelson.

Habitat

This subspecies lives in a small remnant of original coastal forest.

Shell description

The base coloration of the shell is plain, bright reddish-brown, without colour bands. It has a dark brown to black parietal callus crowded with fine granules.

The maximum shell diameter is up to 56 mm, and height up to 32 mm.
