The hooded nudibranch, Melibe leonina or the lion nudibranch is a small sea slug, a predatory nudibranch, a marine opisthobranch gastropod mollusk in the family Tethydidae.
This nudibranch lives in seaweed beds and catches a variety of prey using an unusual head structure called an oral hood.
Distribution
The eastern Pacific ocean coast of North America from Alaska to Baja California including California, British Columbia, etc.
Habitat
This nudibranch lives on kelp and other seaweeds. It is not found intertidally, but in deeper water.
Description
This species grows to about 35 mm in length. It is translucent and usually colorless.
Life habits
This species catches and eats various prey species by using its large muscular oral hood.
It crawls and it also swims well, by using a technique of lateral bending of its body.
