Untitled

Return of Dr. Octagon is the second album by underground hip-hop artist Dr. Octagon, an alias for American hip-hop artist Kool Keith. The album was produced by three producers known collectively as One Watt Sun and released on OCD Records, an imprint of CMH Records. It is notable for the controversy surrounding its release, which includes debate regarding this album's right to its title and the possibility that Kool Keith did not approve of its release in its current form. On his fall 2006 tour, Keith did not perform any tracks from the OCD album. On Keith's spring 2007 tour, during DJ Kutmasta Kurt's set, Kurt performed remixes of tracks from the OCD album.

Controversies

Dr. Octagon Part II

The concept of a sequel to the original Dr. Octagonecologyst album has been plagued with controversy for some years. On October 12, 2005, a bootleg album called "Dr. Octagon Part II" was released by 101 Distribution, in association with Real Talk Records and 33rd Street Records. A post on Kool Keith's official website stated that the album featured a number of demos or incomplete tracks and that its release was not sanctioned by the artist, leading to a lawsuit against the distributor and labels involved in its release.

The Return of Dr. Octagon

Only a few tracks, including Ants, Aliens and Trees contain vocals Kool Keith tracked specifically for CMH Records, and the production, editing and vocal mix represent a noticeable departure from his very recognisable style. While it seems CMH did obtain contractual rights to produce an album (possibly only a remix album) a few years prior its release, the use of the 'Dr. Octagon' moniker is more legally problematic.[1]

The Fanatik-J project

Posts both on Kool Keith's official website[1] and a web forum on the artist[citation needed] indicate that the artist has been working with California producer Fanatik-J on a follow-up record to Dr. Octagonecologyst entitled The Return of Dr. Octagon since spring 2002. Message board posts, including messages from Fanatik-J, indicate that the artist signed up with CMH Records for the album's release before realizing that it was a country music label. According to the producer, after some disputes and alleged misconduct by the label, a demo of vocal tracks was turned over by Kool Keith in 2005 to satisfy the label's demands for proof of work on the project. Fanatik-J alleges that CMH Records then created OCD Records as an imprint label, hired One Watt Sun to mix the project, and released the results under the title The Return of Dr. Octagon without either Kool Keith's or Fanatik-J's consent.

The veracity of Fanatik-J's story is not certain, but appears to be accurate. At this time the artist's official site does not include any direct word from Kool Keith regarding the album since its release. However, the News portion of the site includes a post from early 2006 mentioning the album's imminent release, and notes that "[t]he album is obviously not supported by Kool Keith." Further, fans on online message boards have noted that Kool Keith does not appear in videos for "Aliens," the album's first single. An interview conducted by the website in December 2003 featured these comments from Keith:

Q: What's the deal with Fanatik?

A: I guess he's a fraud.

Q: He ripped off a lot of people on the Octo 2 project.

A: I didn't know about that. I know he is a fraud. Ripping people off. You can write that.

Still, Kool Keith will reportedly be featured in The Wire, among others, refuting the claim that this record is a fake. He has gone on record as confirming this is the follow up to the previous Dr. Octagon record and that there are no problems between him and OCD.[citation needed]

For his part, Fanatik-J continues to promote his project, featuring DJ Tek Threat, as "the 'real' Return of Dr. Octagon." Though he has provided a tracklist and lyrics for some songs, a release date for his version of the album has still not been provided and seems unlikely to materialize.
